Hey guys, headed to Rome on Sunday for a week. We’ll be in Florence for a day as well. Any restaurants that we can’t miss? Up for anything from street food to fine dining. Our hotel is near, if not, at the Spanish Steps, if that helps at all. TIA

Katie Parla will never steer you wrong: LINK
She has a very good Roman cookbook, too.
Make time to eat some pizza al taglio (by the slice, from oblong planks) and pizza bianca (a focaccia like flatbread, only in Rome).

Rome’s centro storico (the touristy central part of town) has plenty of lousy food. It is very easy to get microwaved, frozen crap if you don’t exert yourself.

Not Rome but Buca Lapi in Florence. Local place. You’ll wish you were spending more than 1 day in Florence

I loved antico noe for sandwiches. 15 years since the first time I went and I still remember how awesome it was.

antico noe

Literally every Louisiana person mentions this place when making recs for Florence

It’s such a small, off the beaten path place, doesn’t seem like a tourist trap. I always wonder if one person from LA went there and it just spread by word of mouth. May have to do with our affinity for po boys

Possibly. I randomly found it in 2003. I have certainly told a boat load of people to go there. It is one of the few places in Florence I can tell you step by step how to get to.

Giolitti's is a must for gelato, and it's just a couple of blocks from the Pantheon.

Pizza Florida, off the Torre Argentina (also not far from the Pantheon) has good, cheap pizza.

I also like La Taverna del Ghetto, which had a yummy fried artichoke dish.

But really, I don't know that I had a bad meal in Rome, so pretty much anywhere you eat will probably have good food.

My best meals were at “hey, this place looks good” place on a side street and a place with late night pizza and a carafe of house wine.

The good food isn’t hard to come by.

Best meal I had in Rome. Great service and atmosphere for informal dinner. Get dessert. Not far from Piazza Navona.

Giolitti is old and famous, but there are much better gelato shops (even in that immediate area, like Dei Gracchi and San Crispino). It does have a nice air conditioned sit down salon, if you need a rest while you eat your gelato (though it costs way more at a table).

But +1 on Pizza Florida. I stepped off the #8 tram one day, jet lagged and starving, and scarfed down a folded-over slab of pizza topped with bresaola, arugula, and shaved parmesan. Also in the Ghetto area—Antico Forno makes a great pizza rossa. Super thin and crispy, with a wash of tomato purée that is slightly caramelized from the oven. Wish I had a piece of that pizza rossa right now.

Imago is the 5* restaurant in the Hotel Hassler at the top of the Spanish Steps. Incredible food and views.
