Just take the train. We had a car apart of our trip last year and it was useless

A car isn't useless if you're staying in the Tuscan countryside or something similar.

Trains are easy and efficient to the major tourist areas & population centers. To me, many of the interesting and beautiful things in Italy lie in the countryside. Regional trains aren’t really an option for exploring the south (unless you have an unlimited time schedule), or for enjoying farm stay lodgings, visiting vineyards, etc.

Rented a car. The nav system took us into Florence at 5pm. I felt like Clark griswold at the multi lane traffic circle with mopeds and motorcycles surrounding me.

I would rent a car again but it does suck because whoever is driving doesn't get to see as much.

Being able to rotate drivers definitely makes the experience more pleasant for all. For the average tourist, staying out of city centers is always good advice.

We stayed in montecatini, but went to venice, florence and milan. The tolls were more than train cost. And I couldnt drink the wine I wanted if I woulda had to drive back

I always train between cities in Italy but when we're in the Tuscan countryside or Piedmont region we rent cars. My wife doesn't drink so I have a built in DD for the enoteca and wine touring days (which is what we are primarily there for).

Exactly why I’m renting a car

Get renters insurance

Fantastic advice. When I rent a car in a foreign country I get the "throw the keys at them and leave" insurance so I'm covered no matter what happens.
