Does it piss you off when someone says Europe is too dangerous?

Twice in the last month I've been talking to people at work about travel and when I suggested Europe, they comment that it's too dangerous or "you want to get me killed". The locations I was telling them about were Italy or Spain. Apparently these are hotbeds for violent crime.

One was a young guy, married, no kids, college grad making good money. The other was a girl, mid 20's, again married with no kids and I think her husband is an engineer. She mentioned to me that they were going to Mexico and I said they should check out Europe before they have kids (making it harder to travel to big destinations). She said that's too dangerous. REALLY? You're going to mexico but Italy too dangerous? GTFO!

Here’s what cracks me up: the ppl who routinely frequent the French Quarter and other Orleans parish locales who are afraid of crime in other places. WTF? You visit/hang out/spend late nights in one of the most violent places in the USA, but foreign travel scares you?

Funny you mentioned that. When I lived in New Orleans, that was my logic to visit other places without fear. I figured I was particularly qualified to handle whatever danger lurked.

Yeah, heading to London and Paris in the Spring and people have been like, "Oh, you need to be careful over there". And I'm like...the frick?

Just don't travel with my immediate family. My brother was in London when those three dudes knifed folks. My mom had just left Barcelona when those guys drove down the Ramblas.

They aren't heading that way this year so you're good.

It makes me angry when people I am close with get pissed that I'm going to Southeast Asia. My own mother compares going to Cambodia to visiting the likes of North Korea. Wtf?!

Are they going to Mexico Mexico or to a all inclusive, never leave, resort in Mexico big difference.

The amount of armed military in the major European cities around the popular tourists places should make anyone feel safe there. Even without them, I’ve felt less safe walking around cities in the US than the cities I’ve been to in Europe.

Yes, but it goes booth ways. My European colleagues ask me if it is safe to travel to the US. As with most things, the anger is "it depends". However, we feel safer traveling around Europe than visiting family and friends in BR and NOLA.

You're using the same stereotype against Mexico? Mexico, like most countries, is perfectly safe as long as you use common sense.

It doesn't piss me off but it is laughable. It largely comes from people who have watched the "Taken" movies. People are forming their opinions of the world based on Hollywood movies. And people are horribly obsessed with safety these days. There seems to be a total lack of perspective of the actual statistical dangers out there.

Almost as bad as the people who think all parts of Mexico are dangerous.

most of the people that I hear say this believe it because of political rhetoric (mainly from the belief that Europe is riddled with roaming bands of violent muslims).

This. I have some folks in my family who were in shock that we went to Mexico three times. They just couldn't understand why we would take that risk.

I mean, I've been to Mexico a bunch in the past few years, but Mexico is pretty damn dangerous. They've had some bleed over into the tourist areas.

Well I didn't tell her not to go to Mexico. But even if you were to compare the two objectively, Mexico is much more dangerous than Western Europe.

The people who are afraid to stay in Hostels because of the movie “Hostel” are pretty solid too

I feel like the people that say this are ones who don't want to travel anyway and they can use safety as an excuse. They say its unsafe and would never go but would have no desire to leave Louisiana in the first place.

Just spent 7 weeks in Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Melk, Salzburg. U. S. Wishes it was as safe as these places, young and old walk the streets, ride the trams and subway all hours of the night.
Very clean, no dirt and shite all over, N. O. ,is a dangerous dirty City, full of crooked politicians voted by stupid people.
Read what Austria is doing now to stop unwanted immigrants.

I am a witness....
