Costa Rica for a honeymoon
Posted by Dixie Normus on 12/4/18 at 8:05 pm10
Thoughts?
I’m about book something for my honeymoon (I know, RIP), and have been looking into Costa Rica. Flight seem easy. Just wondering if anyone who has been there has any suggestions. TIA.

We did 10 days/9 nights in early March 2013 for our honeymoon.
Loved it, would go back.
Flew into San Jose, spent the night there
shuttle to Monteverde Cloud Forest area...2 nights there
shuttle to Arenal Volcano area...2 nights there
shuttle to Manuel Antonio area....3 nights there
shuttle to San Jose...one night there fly back to US next day

I’m really interested in doing some hiking around the volcano. Where did you stay for that part of your trip?

Look up Montezuma and see if there are any awesome boutique places to stay. Beautiful part of the country.

Stayed in La Fortuna. There are natural hot springs near there as well.
We had booked an excursion where they took us hiking around the volcano then in the evening we were dropped off at The Springs Resort to enjoy the hot springs there.

We stayed in Fortuna I think. Not sure how much hiking there is on the volcano, when we entered the park they said beware of snakes in a really ominous way. We asked what kind of snakes they had in the forest, THE WORST KIND was our answer. We’d already been through all sorts of forest, but still we sat on the roof of the SUV there. Like other places over there, looks like a fricking lion is going to jump out of the woods at any second.

Look up Gecko Trail travel agency in Costa Rica. We used them to book our entire trip (except airfare) and they were awesome. They planned out our trip based on what we wanted to do. We got off plane and they had a driver there to pick us up. They set up all our shuttles and called us if shuttles where running late, etc. Very responsive to emails as well when I was planning the trip. I would get replies within less than a day from there. Just awesome to work with.

We stayed at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. There are trails from it to the volcano. It's a bit remote from La Fortuna so if restaurants and bars and tourist activities are your thing then somewhere in La Fortuna is probably better. But if nature, wildlife, hiking trails, and views of the volcano are what you want then Arenal Observatory Lodge is a great place.

Stayed here for part of a trip in April this year. I would highly recommend it. You cannot overstate the volcano views from here. You are basically at the base of the volcano.
This was the view from inside the room a true look at how close you are.

How long are you going for? I’d think about breaking it in half, spend a couple days in Arenal, then head to Manuel Antonio. The wife and I stayed at Gaia in MA this June and loved it. Also time of year is important, rainy season and all

I agree with this. Do your luxury adventure part in Arenal and your beach in Manuel Antonio.
Nayara is the place to stay in Arenal.

We plan to go back and stay at MA the whole trip. That area was my favorite by far.
