I know. Gonna be cold as a witch’s tit but headed there for work in December. Looked at the sticky thread for past threads but didn’t see anything.

All knowledge or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

It's a great place to visit, but as stated will be cold as shite. Are you staying in Copenhagen in a suburb? I took a viking ship from Humlebaek down to Copenhagen, which was really cool.

The canal area, Nyhavn is really cool as well. It's about as good of food as you will find in Copenhagen.

It's also the bike capital of the world with more people travelling by bike than by car so we usually rent one and site see.

Sorry, but I don't really know of much stuff to do when it's 30* outside.

As an aside, and this may or may not matter for you, last week I saw SAS was running a "kids fly free" promotion to their Scandinavian destinations over the winter season. Even without kids, flights were very inexpensive.

Nyhavn is the tourists trap/hangout. It is very pretty though. Go to The Meat Packing District, Warpigs is a Barbecue and Brewpub place. Fleisch is a organic meat centric restaurant. Mother is a pizza place. Lots of art galleries in this area you can go in to when its cold outside.
Nørrebro is another great hood just north of the city center. there are tons of restaurants here including Grillen Norrebro which is a burger place.
Vesterbro is a really nice hood with wine bars and lots of shopping.
Christiania is a cool area that has declared itself independent from Denmark. Its a lot of hippies hanging out but there are some nice restaurants there too. Cafe Loppen is an asian place that is very good. Spiseloppen has rotating chefs so the menu changes but its very good. If you want to go total hippie, Cafe Oasen is a vegetarian buffet place. Pusher street is a gravel pedestrian only "road" through Christiania where you used to be able to buy hash and smoke it openly. But the gestapo has cracked down on that.
Christianshavn is adjacent to Christiania but is a very ritzy hood. Noma is in this area.

There are a bunch of great pastry shops all over copenhagen. Just make sure if you go to one, it has the golden pretzel hanging above the door which is a symbol of the Bakers Guild.

Craft Beer is huge in Copenhagen. Some good places to drink craft beer are Brus, Nørrebro Bryghus , Mikkeller, Evil Twin, Fermentoren, Himmeriget and Flying Couch.

Riding a bike is a great way to get around but Ive never been there in December. You're probably looking at a high temp of about 40 and a good chance of rain.

Warning: Copenhagen is very, very expensive.

The Louisiana Museum (no relation to the state of Louisiana) is about 30 minutes outside of Copenhagen and is one of the great modern museums of the world. They have several Edvard Munch paintings including the scream and just about every other modern artist from the 1920's through today. Although the building its in looks very small and unassuming from the street and is in a sort of suburban residential neighborhood.

I eat there every time I've been. Isn't the owner from Dallas or something like that?

Not sure about that. It is owned by Mikkeler and Three Floyds (from Indiana).

What a great review Spot on from my limited experience there.

Only thing to add is Tivoli gardens. I bet it's lit up well during all of December

I should add its easy to zip over to Malmo, Sweden on the train that goes across the Oresund Bridge, takes about 20-30 minutes. I don't have any specific recs for Malmo but they have a big pedestrian only area comprising several streets and plazas full of shops, bars and restaurants. There are also a few old castles that are cool to visit. Frederiksborg castle is probably the best and about an hour outside of copenhagen by train.

I'd avoid this unless you have a death wish. There's a reason Copenhagen stopped allowing immigrants in.

Also no mention of noma?

We never got off the waiting list for it two summers ago due to having only two in our party.

I recommend a place called Frederiks Have. It is award winning. They had mostly locals/business men there when we dined there two Septembers ago.

Do you think you know how to ride a bike?

You don't know how to ride a bike.

I thought I was prepared due to some hack us cycling cat4 racing I did for several years..double pacelines, riding 100+ miles on group rides every weekend..10,000 miles a year etc etc

Well cycling is a bit different in Denmark. These are their cars.
They have an entire bike infrastructure including traffic lights and lanes. When the light changes from red to yellow all hell breaks loose and if you're not moving AND IN THE CORRECT LANE by the time it turns green you will be cursed out by 20 people in Danish.

You get out on a bike and act like you can do what you want and you will get bitch slapped.

You need to take an afternoon and watch how they do it before attempting to hop on a bike and join in. It will not end well if you don't.

You don't just wade in here and do what you want.

There are no sidewalks for you to ride on.

Tell them the truth zappa

This is good advice. But I had no problem jumping in immediately and my cycling background is similar to yours. It really takes about 5 minutes to figure the rules out. On our first visit to Copenhagen 15 years ago, my wife, who had not ridden a bike since she was a teenager, figured things out pretty quick. After that experience she was hooked and we now ride bikes in most every city we go to including Dallas where we live. The only place she doesn't like to ride is inside the canal rings in Amsterdam where there are lots of pedestrians and tourists and 6'-6" kamikaze cycling dutchmen trying to mow down the tourists.

thats my point. you and i kinda know the rules of the road but the casual cyclist might decide to just randomly slow down and stop (thinking this is like a sidewalk) and get barrelled into or cursed at by cyclists behind them on their way to work.

i even made the mistake of 'turning from the straight lane' a couple times and nearly cut someone off.

traffic lights for bicycles that change yellow before they change green and multi-lanes for going different directions in the midst of 700 people trying to get to work or school is a disaster for your average USA sidewalk bicycle rider.

I was there last December- see if the Christmas Kayak parade runs while you’re there. Orient yourself in the city by taking a canal cruise. It’s really neat. Get stoned at Freetown Christiana, then check out the Art Museum and Glytotek. Tivoli Gardens opens for weekends around Christmas. Eat at MASH (delicious high end steakhouse). Check out the David Museum. There are a number of palaces you can check out as well.
