Converting Southwest travel funds into points
Just got an email saying you could convert your funds into points. Most of my funds don't expire until Sept 2022 so they are eligible but trying to think why would I do this? I guess if you don't plan on traveling for 2 years it is a good idea as points don't expire.

Curious if anyone else has looked at this.

Seems like a trap to me.

Convert to points then they'll devalue

I'm on a flight right now but have about $1,000 with them. Got some more flying to do.

I don’t know about the vacation trips.

And that’s what I first thought. They sure aren’t offering this to increase the value.

re: Converting Southwest travel funds into points
It has its benefits: easier to keep track of, never expire, and if you have a voucher (which are locked to one person) you can cash it in to points and use those points to book a ticket for your wife for example. However you won't earn points on points bookings (you would with travel voucher), and they won't count towards A-list or Companion Pass so you have to do the math with that included as well. You could theoretically game the system with Chase/Amex points or gift cards if you can get the math to work in your favor, but they also could theoretically cancel your account if you get too crazy with it. And yes of course could devalue the points at any time and you're SOL.

If you're a reasonably frequent SW flyer I wouldn't, but if you're sitting on a large stash from COVID or are an infrequent flyer it's probably worth it for many. Great of SW to do this, that's why they're my favorite domestic airline.

Also, points are 100% refundable on SWA if you have to cancel a flight.

What is the dollar value per point that they are offering? If a point is worth more than .015 then it is a good deal. Otherwise, nope.

Yeah that’s the first thing that crossed my mind. Seems dumb to convert these unless you literally never travel so you won’t use it by the expiration date.

The offer is $.0128 per point. If you are going to use the points to fly you will get about $.015 per point. I wouldn’t convert.

Never a good idea to buy or convert airline miles... always lose on the deal.

I’ve got more SW points than I’ll be able to use in the next 20yrs already. Don’t need more
