My grand-daughter (6) is begging to go on a Disney cruise. We are planning for mid may. Any suggestions or tips?

We have only been on one cruise (wife and I recently did an Alaskan with Princess).

We did take her to WDW a couple of years ago. She does not want to go back. Wants to do something new.

Thinking about a 4 day out of Canaveral or Miami to Nassau and Castaway Cay.

Disney cruise is expensive for a cruise line, that alone weeds a good bit of the worst part of cruises.

Leaving out of Miami over PC would help some too.

Alaska cruises usually are very nice and have a different crowd, but going on Disney should get you something comparable.

Go if you think you will all enjoy it.

On the other hand, if you’re not into cruises, don’t go. 6 year olds beg for lots of things sold to them by mass media and their friends. You’re the grownups—if you’re not looking forward it it, why not take her someplace you want to go that she will enjoy? Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, NYC to see a kid friendly Broadway show like Wicked & a visit to the big American Girl store.....

We have taken her to WDW, Gatlinburg and GSM National Park, Destin, and several camping trips. Planning a snow outing to Keystone this winter with her. At 63 (though very active and healthy) I don't know how many good years I have. Her Mom is a single mom, and can't afford to miss work to travel much. Grand-daughter was born a few months before I lost my son. She is, truly, our joy in life.

Wife and I travel extensively (though mostly domestic travel).

We try to do 2 trips a year with her and a trip or two for ourselves. This year wife and I did Alaskan cruise and will visit Banff, Canada.

BTW, wife is planning a return visit to NYC with daughter in law and granddaughter next year. I think that is a great suggestion.

The Disney ones are trashy. Take a carnival instead

What world do you live in that you think a Disney Cruise is the worst of two worlds? If it is so bad use that thing called free will and decide to do something else.

6 is a perfect age for a Disney Cruise

You’re an awesome grandfather!! We try to do the same every year and let them help pick out their choices. Just sweet memories.

It’s so sweet of you to take her traveling....I’m sure her mom appreciates a bit of time to herself, too.

You might enjoy taking a train trip with her. NO to Chicago, for example. Lots more fun for a 6 year old than a plane, I think.

We did a four day out of PC. We have three kids. A six year old and two three year olds at the time. It was absolutely incredible.

1. Use a Disney travel agent. Leave your email if you want the contact info for the agent i used. He booked all meal reservations, etc.

2. Don’t get off boat for the Nassau stop. It clears out and the pool and slides are much less crowded.

3. Go to the shows. All of you will love them.

4. Participate in the gift exchange on the floors. Again i can give more info if you’d like.

5. Pirate night is awesome. Get into it.

6. They also have some kid clubs you can take her to and you and your wife can go get a drink. Our kids loved them.

7. Do the character meetups. Especially the princesses. My daughter loved it.

8. Do the dance parties with the characters. Kids love them.

9. Castaway Cay is great. Have someone get off boat right as it arrives to get a good spot. Get one close to the slide on the far side of the island.

It’s a blast. It is expensive but Disney does it right.

If you have the means to do it, by all means, make it happen. She's 6 now, so take advantage of those golden years.

I'm an expert on these matters...my kids are young teenagers. They clam up and quit communicating at age 11.

Enjoy your Disney cruise with your baby girl.

Honestly I know several people who are buying time not having to go to WDW by doing the cruise instead.

You are a good man, Grandpa.

If she likes Disney characters, she will love a Disney cruise. The characters are very accessible. They do have character meals (you usually have to get a ticket, but the cost is included).

There is a tremendous benefit in having the characters INSIDE, all with extremely short lines. The time we went on one, I think the longest character line I stood in, all week, was for Mickey and Minnie in Christmas outfits (we went thanksgiving week when they are already celebrating the holidays) and that line was 10 min.

Sounds like you would get a lot of enjoyment from seeing your granddaughter smile with all the characters, and this is BY FAR the easiest way to make that happen.
