I am looking at getting a new camera. It will mostly be for taking vacation pictures and videos, doing some research on taking pictures of the Northern Lights I have read I need a DSLR camera. I know nothing about cameras so please speak to me like a child when making recommendations.

I am looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T6 right now.

The lenses are and your camera knowledge is more important than the camera body. Top quality lenses can be rented for a trip if you don't want to spend the $$$ on a certain lens or if the lens has no real use for you besides the trip.

I have no desire to go full professional, I just want something easy to use that takes good pictures. I guess my main driving force the the NL I will find those bastids one day. I was cloudy every night while I was in Iceland.

Understanding Exposure

Buy it. Read it. Learn it. Love it.

Much more important than any specific camera.

Expensive glass comes from lenses that have a low f number, most of the good stuff is 2.8 or lower. This pictures might help you understand better. The lower the number the more light that enters the camera faster allowing for a couple of benefits

Get a Nikon D7100. It's a step up from beginners, but has a good autofocus and does well in low light and action. Get a fast lens like the 35mm f1.8 or 28mm 2.8 for the Aurora. You can get that for less than a thousand. It's also weather resistant

Add a telephoto for landscape or wildlife.

Don't get the Nikon D5*** series, it's junk.

I have a cannon rebel set up similar to that and use it all the time with my business for still pictures and vacationing. Though I have gotten lazy lately and just use my phone, the cannon is pretty easy to use and figure out. There are tons of teaching aids out there

Thats a pretty good deal for what you are getting and how you are going to use it

Good choice. It's superior to the Nikon and Canon crop sensor offerings IMO. Pentax makes a hell of a camera, you get a shite load for the money and they are better quality.

Check out the Sony A6000 and the Sony 28mm F2 lens for autofocus or the Rokinon 12mm F2 lens for manual focus. I've used them for astro shots, but I've never been in a location for the northern lights. I can't see why it wouldn't work. The below was using the 28mm lens. The pic could be better with darker sky and more effort in post processing. You will need a tripod.
