I am looking at buying a second home/vacation rental in Montana. Looking in and around Butte as well as pretty much the rest of West Montana. Property is really inexpensive compared to Bozeman/Missoula. Anyone have any history in Butte?

Butte is up and coming. Bozeman and Livingston area are way overpriced, so folks are now looking at Butte. Georgetown Lake, Discovery Ski area, Fairmont Hot Springs, Pipestone with 75 miles of off road trails, and Old Works Golf Course are all with 20 minutes. Surprising number of decent restaurants. Biggest issue in my opinion is it snows from October to June.

Lived in Anaconda 20 miles from Butte. Houses are very cheap compared to Bozeman or Missoula. But most are very old and outdated in town. Land is more expensive than I would have thought and can be tough to get water to it.

Mostly quiet town. Discovery ski was cheap but a fun mountain. Old Works golf course is a economical Nicklaus course. Good fly fishing and hunting in the area. The Pintlar range is as pretty as Glacier park once you hike into them.

Butte isn’t the prettiest place but is getting better from what I’ve seen.

I would love to move back once I retire.

Butte is an old Irish mining town. Locals can sound like they’re from Boston.

When prohibition was enacted, they just ignored it.

Old mining town, still a bit rough around the edges, but I like a little grit in a town.

Is the uptown area livable? I am looking at an updated condo in an old building as well as possibly buying land to develop later. I love the Philipsburg area which is convenient from Butte. What are your thoughts about land around there?

I remember it in the 70's. If you think it is gritty now you should have seen it and East Helena then.
