The back road from Ft Collins to Laramie, Wy is an awesome drive.

I'd stretch your drive by a few minutes and look at Rocky Mountain National Park. Check out this site for a list of hikes and difficulty. LINK

The middle of April is ski touring season, not hiking season out here.

Go west out of Fort Collins up poudre canyon to Walden and north to Laramie. Beautiful drive through some pretty remote country.

Walden

Gold medal waters up in Jackson County around Walden. Used to go up there for work every other week. North Park is what the region is called. Tons of wildlife roaming the high valley floor. Antelope everywhere. Also see moose coming down from Cameron Pass into the valley. Saw a black bear that had come down from the mountains into the edge of the valley grassland, I'm guessing looking for food.

Yeah that’s great country, tons of things to do and not jam packed with people like it is closer to the front range. The state forest has great hiking and fishing over there with no crowds in my experience.
