Question for the board, I’ve got a dilemma...

I’ve just recently started traveling internationally and am looking for an airline to switch my domestic travel over to, in order to reap the benefits.

I normally fly SW, due to their proximity to me and ease of options between the main places I go for work. I’m highest status and have got more miles than I know what to do with, but cant really do much with them aside from domestic travel.

What’s the boards thoughts on the best airlines for my situation?

I’ve done status match with United, but have been looking at Delta and AA also.

Thoughts?

If you’re going to be flying internationally then look at what airlines are in what alliances. Choose from there. International flights on foreign carriers are generally much better than international flights on domestic carriers.

Your usual origin city matters, too. See which carriers have better service from your home airport.

Looks like AA has the best alliance... I love Cathay Pacific.

However, I’ve heard AA fricking sucks and is often one of the worst ranked domestic carriers. Plus you have to pay them to status match

Houston, so all major carriers out of here

Your best bet is United for international as it's the only major international carrier that considers Houston a hub. It's part of the 2nd largest alliance behind sky team (Delta, Houston is not a hub). I find that United has more direct international flights than most carriers (through personal/business travel experience from Denver), plus Lufthansa and Singapore airlines are pretty good. Although, I have a hard on for Qantas Melbourne to Tokyo flights because the crews are fantastic every time, but they are an American partner (one world).

That’s who I started off with and got my status match at Premier Gold, but was second guessing whether they were the best airline, as it looks like its difficult to earn rewards with them.

Of course, I’m coming from SW, which is a breeze...

Oof.

Yeah, I would certainly think United. They have pretty good redemption. They just recently dropped the award chart, but international redemptions still look good from what I've seen so far.

If you are based out of HOU, United is probably your only real option for doing what you are looking to do.

That’s what it seems like and what I have started going down the path on.

Just wanted to get the boards thoughts.

Thanks for the input!

Ditto on United if you are based out of Houston.

Transferred 400k Chase Miles to United and used them for two first class tickets to Tokyo. Fantastic redemption.

Chase is transferable to United - which is a better deal than a United card.

I use my CSR points at the 50% redemption to buy united. Use points and still earn miles.
