We're off for a long awaited cruise. We'll be going with my best friend from high school/best man in wedding and his wife. Special time for us as he'd recently completed stem cell transplant and chemo. Wasn't sure we'd make it to be honest, but he's been blessed with a recovery and has all his immunizations now.

Attached is the itinerary. They did lop off St. Petersburg and Estonia for obvious reasons, but this is still a great route. Love this site and will "pay it forward" and post updates periodically along to way for those interested.

A little downtime to post a quick trip update.

The ship is spectacular. 590 out of 900 capacity. Multiple bars and restaurants. Service and food are great. We got the Silver Spirits package so drinks are included and you can get anything you want whenever. This is our first ocean cruise on Viking. Amazed at the amount of amenities like gyms, spas pools etc. Viking’s health policy is to still do daily saliva tests. Once you’ve tested negative however you don’t have to wear a mask on the boat.

Our first few days were in Bergen Norway. The weather has really cooperated except for today its cold and raining as we are sailing to Oslo.

Norway is a beautiful country and the scenery is spectacular. We got to kayak in a fjord which was amazing.

Second part of the trip had stops in Oslo and Aalborg in Norway, Copenhagen in Denmark and Rostock Germany.

Except for one rainy day the weather has been pretty good.

Copenhagen was really cool. Lot of great restaurants and bars. Everyone speaks English. Very health conscious, you see lots of people running and biking. The ancient Viking fort and burial ground at Linholm was fascinating.

The castle tour at Schwerin was amazing. Never knew it existed,

Updates from final part of the trip.

Spent the day in Gdansk, a city on the Baltic coast of northern Poland. Was a "Bucket List" location an it did not disappoint. Beautiful port town. Very clean. Vibrant. One of our favorite stops. Got to discover what is now my favorite liquer: Goldwasser. "Goldwasser liqueur (literally 'gold water' in German), has been a popular Gdansk tradition since 1598. And though other brands and distilleries have tried to copy it, Goldwasser continues to be inextricably linked to Gdansk. A strong (40%) root and herbal liqueur."

Because we'd been redirected from St. Petersburg and Estonia, Viking added another smaller island stop Mariehamn, Åland Islands (part of Finland). Beautiful island. Very laid back.

Last part of the trip was Stockholm. Ended up being our favorite city along with Bergen Norway. Unfortunately, we only had one day then had to depart. The highlight of the trip was the fascinating Vasa Museum. The "pride" of the Swedish Navy sank a few hundred meters from it's berth when it got launched, never seeing battle. The story of being raised from the bottom was really interesting.

The ride back was one of the biggest clusters I've ever experienced. A four hour delay to Newark, coupled with a 3 hour delay for weather, led to a 23 hour trip. Uggh.

Covid wise, we had to have a negative PCR test to re-enter the US. Ship provided that documentation for us. Had to show it in Stockholm as well as fill out a CDC form. Global entry back into the US was unbelievably easy. Just smile and get your picture taken and that was it. Customs just looked at our passport. No baggage search.

All in all, a very enjoyable cruise. Not sure I'd do another Ocean Cruise. Just way too big for me, but it did offer some really neat amenities like multiple bars, restaurants, a theater, work out room and sauna etc.

What was neat for me was we met several attendants from Serbia and Bosnia working on the ship. One drew us an extensive map for our upcoming trip next year with all sorts of suggestions. They are such humorous, fun loving people.

Thanks!

FYI, since that report, have softened on the idea of another Ocean Cruise. The one that starts in Venice (Empires of the Mediterranean) and tours the Adriatic, stopping in Croatia, Montenegro and Greece, looks appealing. Only issue I'd have is a Bucket List Trip was to be to Bosnia, and having more time in Montenegro and Croatia, but maybe we can build on this one.

Viking Options.

Last summer when the Covid restrictions started to lessen, we did Celebrity Apex Athens-Santorini-Mykonos-Rhodes-Croatia-Athens

Flew back to Dubrovnik and rented a car and drove Croatia for five days.

Bosnia and Montenegro would be a great addition to your trip you have in mind.

The wife and I did a 12 day Royal cruise out of Rome that hit all those spots. Two days in Venice, multiple stops in Italy and Croatia, then Montenegro, Slovenia, and Corfu. Probably our favorite overseas trip.
