I just moved to North Carolina and I’m a couple of hours away from Myrtle Beach. I plan on taking the family there a weekend in April or May. What would you all recommend and is it worth visiting?

MB has plenty for kids; uncountable # of minature golf places, hotels on the beach w/ indoor pools & lazy rivers, and typical touristy attractions; e.g., Ripley’s Believe it or Not type activities.
There is an alligator farm that kids like.
If you want a little less crowded place go to the North MB area or the very south of the beach hotels near where the airport is.
Hotel prices go up the closer you get to Memorial Day.

If you go during the two biker weeks, you will see things that you cannot unsee.

We were driving through MB to Charleston during bike week once and somewhere around Murrell’s Inlet the locals came out of their subdivision and set up lawn chairs along the highway to watch the biker “parade” go by. They must have been expecting to see some unsual sights.
I need to take pictures of things like that.

I would stay in North Myrtle beach. Myrtle Beach was pretty sketchy the last time I went.

North Myrtle Beach/Cherry Grove isn't bad. Also, south of Myrtle at Surfside or Garden City is nicer. Nice houses, fewer hotels, and good restaurants. You could stay here and drive to MB for fun for your kids.

Myrtle Beach itself is nothing but trashy hotels, arcades, small amusement parks, and miniature golf. I am from SC, and I haven't been to the beach there since I was in high school.

It gets overrun by folks from WV, OH, and those surrounding states during the summer. Also, like another poster said, don't take the kids during the last two weeks of May.

I am a native and resident of Conway, so here are my recommendations:

1) Brookgreen Gardens - This is about 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield. You have sculptures, gardens, fountains, archaeological findings, a small zoo and can take a boat tour through the historic rice plantations. It is absolutely beautiful there and well worth the drive. You are also in close proximity to a ton of great seafood restaurants in Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island.

2. Huntington Beach State Park - Right across the road from Brookgreen Gardens. It is home to a large beach, a nature preserve and Atalaya Castle, the Moorish revival home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. This is highly recommended and is also close to the restaurants of Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island.

3. Historic Downtown Conway - This is the most underrated area of Horry County. Conway is a world away from Myrtle Beach, culturally and aesthetically, and is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. It's downtown area is a great place for a family. You have the Riverwalk, the antebellum historic homes by Kingston Lake, Laurel and Elm Street, Town Hall, the Old Courthouse and some good boutique and antique shops. The Horry County museum is on 9th Avenue and Main and is free. Plus there's the Trestle and Rivertown Bistro for y'all to get a bite to eat.

4. Vereen Gardens - This is in Little River and is about as close to Calabash, NC as you can get while still being in SC. It is a very beautiful area overlooking the marsh towards Cherry Grove. You will be able to see lots of wildlife and sea creatures there.

5. Market Common - for your typical touristy shopping and eating needs, Market Common is probably your best bet. It is very nice this time of year, has a lot of shopping, some good restaurants and is definitely more like what you'd find in Mt. Pleasant than Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach gets a bad reputation, but it is not a bad place to be from September to April. Your family should have a good time.

And if you have any questions about where to eat, let me know what type of food you're looking for and I'll respond.

We have been to Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park and 2nd that recommendation. For the OP, Google Anna Hyatt Huntington to learn some history about both.
(I did not know about Vereen Gardens, will have to check that out.)

There is a board walk behind the strip of restaurants at Murrell’s Inlet. You can walk from restaurant to restaurant and several of them will have live music for everyone’s enjoyment when the weather is nice.

We usually go to MB once or twice a year in the fall or spring to avoid the crowds. We stay at the Hampton Inn on the beach near the airport ( south end) but there are other places that kids would like better. Better pools, etc. And probably cheaper too, especially in the off season.

Where are you in NC? I grew up about 3 hours from MB and spent lots of time there. It’s gotten better over the years, but depending on what you’re looking for I’d prefer somewhere like Holden Beach or Oak island - more laid back atmosphere but drivable to MB for a day trip for the “touristy” activities like shopping, mini golf, etc.
