The wife and I have done Napa/Sonoma several times, and really enjoy it. We are looking for something a little different, and Paso Robles seems like a good change of pace. Anyone have any recommendations, or criticisms?

We made a short visit there 5 years ago next month. Reminded me of Sonoma 30-35 years ago. Stayed in Paso Robles and wineries visited were Justin, Eberle, Peachy Canyon, Opolo, J Lohr and several other smaller ones near those. Also, there are tasting rooms in the town of Paso Robles. We were coming from Sequoia/Kings Canyon and then took the PCH north to SF. San Simeon (Hearst Castle) is not far from Paso Robles and the Santa Barbara wine areas are south of Mono Bay.

Go to Eberle winery and wear LSU gear. Guy who owns it (Gary I think is his name) did some time at LSU. Great wine. The cabs from that area have a distinct taste.

quote:

GARY & MARCY EBERLE Gary Eberle grew up in Moon Township, Pennsylvania and was an all-star football player in high school. He was awarded a full ride scholarship to play football at Penn State in 1962. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology, then attended Louisiana State University (LSU) for graduate work in cellular genetics. His success earned him a National Fellowship to Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where a professor introduced him to Bordeaux wine; one year later, Gary headed to U.C. Davis to study enology. Gary received a degree in Enology in 1971 and headed south to Paso Robles in 1973.

Went through there years ago but didn't stay there. Lots of wine made there. Cambria, a small town on the coast is nearby and may be a good place to stay. Overall, a non-crowded beautiful part of the state.
