Anyone have a favorite way to get good value on where you are staying while traveling?

A particular hotel chain, AirBnB, Couch Surf etc..

A decent AirBnB is almost always cheaper than getting a hotel.
Plus I like that my AirBnB account is linked to my Delta Skymiles so I can earn points for using AirBnB.

Orbitz when they have a promo code, stacked with Ebates cash back.

A couple of travel rewards cards so that my traveling earns potentially free future travel...
In Europe, smaller non-chain hotels with included breakfast are often a better deal (and in better locations) than the international chains.

We always use Airbnb unless its just a 1 night stay. Even then we will use AirBnB if we can. Its not as cheap as it used to be but its still a good value and usually a larger space in an actual neighborhood vs. a hotel.

Another for AirBnB. It’s not such a great deal everywhere, but in some places it’s almost unreal what you can get for a low cost.

Sweet spots on points.
Korean Air round trip 25k UR pts each to Hawaii - Wife and I been three separate occasions: Maui, Kauai, Oahu
ANA airlines round trip to Asia 60k MR pts: Last year we went to Tokyo with a stopover in Ho Chi Minh City. Already booked Hong Kong with stop over in Soeul for this November.
Alaska Airlines round trip 80k pts: Have a flight booked next spring for Sydney with a stop over in Fiji then return trip stop over in New Zealand.
eta: Just read your post again on where staying lol. Of course, for us, all on points. Many sweet spots with hotels also on points. Hyatt, IHG, Hilton, SPG/Marriott- I own all these cards and So does the wife so we get a decent category hotel that's worth the annual fees especially for international travels.

I just get free nights with rewards.
In the past when I used to attend week long training events from time to time I loved staying at an Embassy Suites. Big arse breakfast in the morning and I would take breakfast bars and fruit when I left. Training would provide lunch. Then every evening the hotel has lite food and free alcohol for two hours.
I would save up all of my meal per diem money and go somewhere really nice for dinner every other night or use it to gamble, etc.

-Credit card points
-Airbnb
-Travel & hotel site promos (orbits, Expedia, etc)
That's pretty much the order I go in. The rare occasion that I do book a hotel without CC points, I always scour the internet for promos and gift cards. Never pay full price from the hotel site or even on travel sites without a promo code. They're too easy to find.
And the website FlyerTalk is an awesome reference to find deals.

I’ll just echo the AirBnB and CC points comments. If you aren’t taking advantage of those two, you’re not likely getting the most bang for your travel buck.
