My wife and I are planning our summer 2022 vacation and have the general concept nailed down. But now I'm agonizing over how to connect all the dots.

The general concept is to do Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. Originally, we were planning on flying into Zagreb and then meander through Croatia and Slovenia on our way to Venice/Padua/Verona, then hit Tuscany for a few days before flying back home out of Florence or Rome.

Then I heard about Dubrovnik, Croatia...which - from the photos I've seen - appears like it could be a legit contender for the coolest town I've ever visited. Now we are obsessed with getting there. The problem is that - because of its location at the very southern tip of Croatia - it presents a logistical nightmare considering all the other things we wanted to do.

So now I'm thinking we fly into Italy (Rome or Florence), hit Tuscany and then make our way around the Adriatic Coast to Dubrovnik.

Anyone have any advice on this? We'll have 16 total days of traveling. I'd really like to include Italy, because I'm fairly proficient in Italian and we absolutely love the country.

Not sure if this helps or not, but I came across this article this morning.

How to get around in Croatia

I’ve wanted to go to Croatia for some time now. I can’t imagine going and not spending time in the Pearl of the Adriatic.

I can get you partly the way there. And our hero Teddy Ruxpin will be going to Croatia in July and you'll get all the 411.

We flew into Venice, rented a car, then went to Opatija. A beautiful coastal city. Then went to the most amazing place in the world: Plitvice National Park.

Croatia Pictures.

Then on to Ljubljana, the capital and largest city of Slovenia. My favorite Country in the world by far that I've been to is Slovenia. A few selected pictures.

The Vintgar Gorge on the eastern part of Triglav National Park is spectacular. If you are a history buff, The Isonzo Front in Slovenia, was one of the First World War’s most brutal campaigns. Particularly liked staying in Kobarid. They have a great museum.

Historic Trail.

The preserved battlefield part at Kolovorat is amazing.

So much to do in any of these countries. Didn't even talk about the small cruise ships along the Croatian coast. We may do that one day.

Will be interested in see the other responses you'll get on this amazing trip!

Yes, as Nole Man said I'll be doing Zagreb to Dubrovnik over a week starting early July.

My concern is wondering if 16 days and that much ground to cover will be tough, since I imagine you'd want to spend couple to 3 days at some of your stops. I do agree you're going to have to one way it.

Right now, my itinerary is this:

Day 1: Land in Zagreb early morning and head to Plitvice. (2 hour drive)
Day 2: Do more Plitvice if needed since day before may be a bear. If not, head towards Krka and/or Trogir. End in Split. (Straight shot is 2 hours, so add more for stops)
Day 3: Split (I may day trip a boat one of these days depending on how we like Split)
Day 4: Split
Day 5: Drive to Dubrovnik, making potential stop in Omis for breakfast, later beach stop in Markaska or quiter beaches south. Thinking Plaza Drasnice. (Drive is 4 hours straight)
Day 6: Dubrovnik
Day 7: Dubrovnik
Day 8: Fly home

I would have liked to have 2 more days to add an island like Hvar but I'm exercising self control in not bouncing around too much. I'm a 2 nights minimum kind of guy. Packing my shite up every night sucks.

Vintgar Gorge has been saved on my google maps for some time.

Trick I learned is any time I see a cool place I save it in Google maps so if I go there my itinerary is pre built a bit.

Anyway, I hope to do Switzerland, Northern Italy and Slovenia trip someday. Suddenly, I'm a big alpine lake fan

Any tips for doing this or is it pretty straight forward? I've never used google maps for anything other than the most basic her to there gps trips.

Damn, that 7 day Split to Dubruvnik cruise for only $1200 per person looks awesome.

I'll have to keep this in mind.

Ya'll are killing me . So many incredible places that weren't even on my radar to begin with. I made this thread hoping to make my decisions easier...not harder

We may have to spend more time in Slovenia than we originally planned. Looks amazing. Those small boat cruises ending in Dubrovnik are also extremely tempting. Goodness, it looks like my homework has only just begun!

I'm thinking that it will be tough to make it all the way from Tuscany to Dubrovnik. But I could see it working out pretty well if we flew into Venice and started from there. Kind of a bummer. We have a couple of good friends in Cortona, and really wanted to spend a couple of days there. I'm thinking we'll ultimately need to pick either Tuscany or Dubrovnik.

I suppose we could always fly between Florence/Venice and Dubrovnik. But we prefer to travel by train or automobile when we can to see more of the country.

Thank you for all the info

Speaking of Plitvice, if you haven't gotten accommodations yet, we thoroughly loved the Plitvic Miric Inn. About 3 miles from the park entrance. Very nice rooms. Breakfast included. Have like a "happy hour" type thing later on.

LOL! That's how we roll. Amazing world out there. So many places, so little time.

Tuscany to Dubrovnik

I feel like that's a big bite to take personally. Tuscany alone could be worthy of several weeks, as are any of these locations you're considering. Pick one or two locations and just do the "cultural immersion" thing.

Honestly, I think you have to have the mindset you'll be going back to all these wonderful locations multiple times in the future. Otherwise, you'll have this "it's Tuesday it must be..." experience packing and unpacking.

Regarding the Italian thing, remember all of the countries mentioned were part of land grabs going way back in history. Italian is spoken throughout the Northwest parts of Croatia. Some cities in that region were settled by Italians and have that vibe to them. You could take some side trips near Slovenia to the Prosecco Region.

We hired a guide in the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and did an all day tour. Right on the Slovenian Border. Great time. And you could speak your Italian!

Agreed. We've been to Tuscany before, so it's more about wanting to see our friends there. But maybe they can meet us in Venice or something. I do love Tuscany and Umbria though. Gorgeous provinces.

Indeed. That's one of the reasons Slovenia and Croatia popped up on our radar. I know that it's common for signage in those countries to include Italian, but I wasn't sure how common it was to hear it spoken by locals. Thank you for the additional tips!

Are you familiar with Trieste, by any chance?

Haven't been there. We looked at flying in there, but ultimately flew into Venice because it was cheaper. We considered staying there, Koper or Piran Slovenia and Opatija Croatia, which we later picked because it was closer to Plitvice and was a 3+ hour drive from Venice after a long flight. A nice little coastal town that has kind of a resort area type vibe. Opatija is OK for a visit.

I will say from some of our travel partner's input, and someone I know that lives in Ljubljana, Trieste didn't get real high marks as a destination location. Their vote would be Rovinj, Croatia first choice, and Piran second choice.

Why? They'd say Rovinj is absolutely the place to go. One of the loveliest seaside villages. The old city is supposedly stunning. You could then do day trips to Porec and Pula. TripAdvisor summary.

It's straight forward. When you put a place into Maps you can see a "Save" button.

Then you have "Want to Go", "Starred" and "Favorites"

I think the one notable difference is that Want to Gos aren't exportable, which may matter at some point.

I think your phone will buzz you if you are near a Want to Go. Not sure if it does that for a Starred Place.

Ya I ended up picking a park accomodation. I understand the pros and cons of that, but I believe there is a feature where they can stamp my ticket so I can use it again for free the next day, which may be needed as mentioned in my itinerary above.

Rovinj

Ya I see this place getting lots of good reviews. Istria was just a bit too far after I had already put down a general outline what I thought myself and my wife would be interested in. Not sure if you mentioned Pula. That has a preserved coliseum. Also near Pula are two spots I saved, Galebove stijene and Verudela Canyon that look cool.

She's lucky I'm not gonna spend time trying to go to Zeljava Airbase or any of the Communist monuments in the north. That's route 66 type stuff

You can do Split in a day. I would definitely try to get out to Hvar, it is incredible. Kiva Bar might be my favorite place on earth.

My wife is pregnant

Hence the hedging on how fast I can move about, or getting on a boat.

ETA: after looking into it again, the fast ferry is 50 minutes to Hvar Town from Split. I think we'll do a day trip.
