Anyone ever flown AA basic economy?

I’ve only done it once and the family and I are going to LA in late May and right now I can lock in 4 nonstop flights from DFW to LAX for $695 total with taxes
It’s an extra $300 to upgrade to main cabin which still isn’t bad, just curious if it were you would you risk getting tickets at check in and not sitting together
Plus you board last

How old are the people flying? Also- DFW-LAX should only be about 3 hours. I probably pull the trigger.

As it gets closer you can still pay to pick seats. I've done this multiple times.

I'd book it. Between now and late May there is likely going to be a schedule change and after looking at their rules it's very flexible. After you are done booking, call into American and let them know the 2 2 split is all youre looking for. Here's from their website

ETA: Learning something new, AA now allows carryons with their basic economy fare. Is united still the only one with no luggage allowed?
quote:
Children (2 years or older)
Children 2 or older are required to have their own seat; a ticketed adult fare. Children under 5 can’t travel alone under any circumstances. If you don't choose seats in Main Cabin or Basic Economy within 48 hours of buying tickets, we will attempt to assign children under 15 with at least one adult they're traveling with.

If you can't pay 1000 dollars for 4 people to go to LA, you shouldn't go.

You are not guaranteed a seat together even with the kids. The airlines will try to accommodate you, or the flight attendants might ask if people are willing to give up a seat so that your family can sit together. However, if people paid for those seats, they may not be happy about doing it unless you are trading an aisle/window seat for a center seat.

Dang I’m torn. What would y’all do?

I would book it and play the game. Book it and call them given the kids ages. Most airlines let you cancel within 24 hours. As Cuse or someone else said you could still buy seats later if you get nervous.

I'd fly in first class but that's me.

Book the cheap seats and don’t worry about. American will have your kids with an adult. If it was United it may be a different story.
Hell me and my wife flew the basic to Grand Cayman last year and on the way back ended up with exit row seats.

Which reminds me- check the type of aircraft and look for one with a better layout if possible (assuming prices are the same)

Fly SWA instead and get family boarding at no extra charge. You get to board after A group.
Also add another $200 for baggage if you fly AA and you cannot use overhead bins with Basic.

We have 3 travel rules in our house, two of which are "Never fly American" and "Never fly Basic Economy"
Sooooo

Pretty sure that just if the kid is 6 or under.
I'd just pay the higher fare for the peace of mind.

I hate AA but we just flew them to MIA, basic economy, and it was fine. We have an AA credit card so we didn't board last. I also ended up buying seats for a whopping $38 roundtrip for peace of mind. So $238 all in roundtrip for two and free bags, I'll take it. Of course we fly back tomorrow so there's plenty of time for them to piss me off again.

What's the last one? I for one abide by at least those rules.

Yeah, that isn't a terribly long flight. I would book it. Anything more than 3+ hours I want more room.

I'm an elite on AA, and have never heard anything bad about BE so would probably give it a try.
