Hey everyone. My family and I are planning a trip this summer to South Africa. We have narrowed the trip down to these two options.
1. Amsterdam, Capetown, Safari
2. Capetown, Safari, Victoria Falls.

We are having a hard time deciding between the two. What say the Travel Board?

How much time are you trying to attribute to Victoria Falls or Amsterdam?

We did Cape Town and Sabi Sands this past March. Africa is awesome and I could have added more days to it. Especially since it is more likely you'll visit Europe more often in your life.

Excluding travel time, we would have three full days in Amsterdam or two full day at Victoria Falls.

We are going to spend the major of our time(8 days) in Capetown/on the Safari.

We recently did a trip all over Western Europe, but couldn't squeeze Amsterdam into it.

Do the safari. And Vic falls .

I went in 2007 and while it’s been a long time. That trip is easily my favorite and most eye opening trip of my life .

I didn’t do Cape Town however and would’ve loved to do it.

My trip was Joburg, ( went to Nelson Mandela’s childhood home , saw some apartheid memorials) then in the rickitiest prop plane onward to Bulawayo Zimbabwe then to this place called Antelope park where they raise baby lions up and reintroduce them to the wild . They have a game reserve there and you can ride elephants and the adult lions roar at sunrise and it’s so surreal. Stayed there for 5-6 days I believe

Just figured I’d throw this in. It’s very safe. They have armed guards with AK’s and it’s fenced in but 1,000 and 1,000 of acres. So you won’t feel trapped in

As far as Vic falls, amazing. It makes Niagra falls look like the distance between your sink in your bathroom to the drain.

But there’s not much to do around the falls, 2 days absolute max there . But go Bungee Jump the bridge or white water raft the river if that is something y’all are into.

Edit: one of the scariest moments of my life was at Victoria falls.. the group I was with, my friend and I got separated and it was getting dark around the local market where you can buy trinkets and stuff and we were surrounded by Zimbabweans and I realized then we had made a major mistake and was most unsafe I’ve ever felt as I was in a foreign land and I didn’t know what was about to happen to me .

Luckily armed police swarmed us and started blowing their whistles and the crowd dispersed as they escorted us back to our cabin place the group was staying at .

Edit 2: don’t let my story sway you. It’s still majestic . And you and your family need to see the falls . It was because of my poor choice that I felt unsafe. Had nothing to do with the environment or anything .

My opinion is to do the falls then and as the poster stated, two days should be great.

Take the day not used for Amsterdam and add it to Cape Town/Safari.

Franshhoek outside Cape Town is awesome. If you can get this AirBnB and only need two bedrooms, do it.

Franshhoek Pass Villa LINK

There may be similar villas with views like this. Drink wine for a whole day...or two.

For the kiddos head to Simon's Town South of Cape Town for Boulder Beach penguin colony. Take Chapman's Peak drive either there or back. Awesome drive.

I’m going to co-sign with Teddy also...
When you tell people you went to Amsterdam they’ll say oh nice , but you tell people you went to Africa , and people light up with amazement .

Logistically it’s much easier to get to Amsterdam and it’s a trip you can do some other time but Africa... man...
It’s a place you won’t ever forget and your family will never forget it .

It made me so much less materialistic and as a 17 year old at the time, it was a humbling place to be .
It will make you feel so blessed to have what you have

This was when Mugabe was still in power and there was million percent inflation and a lot of starving people were around us and knowing I had on a fossil watch and new balance shoes and a fleece jacket ( not OT baller items) but any of those could’ve fetched a price to feed a family for awhile .

It definitely altered my outlook on things and could be a teachable moment for you and your family as well. Cheers .

Definitely Vic falls.

We like staying in Camps Bay and renting a car.

I love Amsterdam but having been there a few times I would say skip it and do number two. You can always pick up AMS on another trip to Europe.

We did option 2 in 2015. I strongly recommend that you do Amsterdam another time

Thank y'all for the advice! I think we will definitely skip Amsterdam in favor of Vic Falls.

Depends on what you like to do when you travel?

Personally I would pick Victoria Falls.
