The thread about St. Lucia got me thinking the other day. My wife and I have been talking about going somewhere for our 10 year anniversary. It’ll be in March 2021. We’ve kind of narrowed it down to St. Lucia or Bora Bora. The only problem I’m having is with flights. Says you can only book a flight 330 days out. We’d like to book our resort, but not if we can’t get down there on the check in day. How do you guys handle booking flights in advance?

What's the cancelation policy for the resort?

No way in heck would I be booking that far out. Way too many variables and potential issues, from a bad hurricane season to a resort being sold to things like health/injury issues.

If I remember correctly, I could get like 50% back if cancelled 15-30 days out but nothing, 0-15 days out. I couldn’t find anything that would give you a full refund if you had to move your reservation because you couldn’t get a flight on a particular day.

Most airlines are on a 50 week booking window and schedules will change even after the window opens.

There’s no magic date for international travel bookings, but the cheapest fares can typically be found 4-6 months from travel date.

But as with everything, it depends on the route, time of year, load factors, etc.

Call the resort and talk to them personally. Look at flights for 2020, see what days they arrive. If its only like 4 days a week, you certainly may have issues. But often times the flights don't fluctuate much as far as days of the week unless its a special, new flight, or not making money.

Overall, you are 14 months out. I'd pump the breaks on worrying right now. If you book at 11 months out when flights are in you will still be more then fine. Nothing wrong with reservations 12+ months out, just saying its not necessary.

I'd absolutely look into travel insurance if you only get 50% back also, its usually around 7%.

I get what you are saying but, the only issue with that is that some of the rooms that we are looking at have been booking up. We want to have the room that we want or something pretty close. That's where the issue with the flights come in at.

My best bet may be to contact the resort directly and speak with someone that can give me some guidance. Hopefully, if I book a room and am not able to get a flight on the scheduled check in day there will be a little flexibility to accommodate us getting there.
