I have a 8-hour layover at JFK upcoming, do I venture out into the city or stay at the airport?

I'm in process of getting TSA checkpoint stuff handled and hopefully, it is done before my flight bit still. I've been to NY several Times so essentially I would just leave to grab drinks and food.

I had a 6 hour layover at JFK a few months back. Be prepared to overpay for beers.

Mmmmmmm..... What time woukd you be leaving the airport? Brooklyn is possible but it would be tight and I would be nervous the whole time I was sitting at Threes or Other Half. NYC traffic is on another level of stupid.

When’s the flight? Centurion Lounge is opening at JFK early this year. Not sure about Delta lounges.

Then you probably have time for Brooklyn. I would budget 2 hours out and head back by 3:30......so 2.5 hours doing whatever. I wouldn't risk going into Manhattan. I may be overly cautious but that's what I would do.

Yeah, I plan on throwing my carry-on into my check-in bag since I don't need either. Would have me going withy book sack and going back through TSA with just that.

If I don't get my priority shite handled I may not want to leave

I have Global Entry, which factors a bit into the decision process.

I’ve done Brooklyn on a 7 hour layover, took a cab to Brooklyn and the train back to JFK.

Cab (or I guess Uber) can be 30 mins to an hour or better, the train (JFK-Brooklyn) is ~1.25 hours. (Air Train/LIRR/Q Train)

It’s around 15 miles by car and it can be horrible traffic-wise.

Avoid the temptation of going into Manhattan.

I personally wouldn’t bother with it unless there was something specific I really wanted to see.

Yes you have plenty of time. I would get Clear if you can so that speeds things up even more. When I had this happen I tried to check everything I could because hauling luggage around sucks. I kept just my backpack.

With 8 hours you have sufficient time to do lots of things. Mine was 6 hours and the wife and I went to eat outside the airport and go grab a few things. We still had plenty of time when we got back to go to the SkyClub. There I was able to take a shower before my transatlantic and slept well.

As a platinum you don’t get free access but my sense is your Amex probably gets you in for $29. Free booze options- there are plenty- and it is a steal compared to paying $10+ a beer in the airport. The food options are ok but limited. If it is a nice day the sun deck is a great place to spend a few hours enjoying the tarmac.

I love JFK and there is ample stuff to do around there. If you are a nervous flyer I would show back up at 430pm for your second flight. I probably show up at 530pm personally.

Train ride to Other Half takes about 45 minutes each way. We went there and ate somewhere else in Brooklyn. That is about all the time we had.

I absolutely would. I had a 4 hour at JFK a few years ago and I was bored out of my mind, it was early morning though and not a lot was open.

just make sure you budget enough time to get back.
