The summer of 19 will be Mrs. Coach and I's 10th anniversary. We cannot decide on what to do. We love the beach, but go to Destin every year. (She is keen on going to St. Somewhere. We have discussed going abroad Europe (either UK or Germany) or Japan. We also talked about gong to wine country, but I know some of it was decimated by the fires this year.

As a couple, we love to eat and drink and sight see. I play golf, but golf isn't necessary for this trip.

I'm really at a loss. We have a week with each weekend, so 9 days. It will be a summer trip. The world is our oyster. What did y'all do? What would you recommend?

Same here, Coach, congrats. We are going to Costa Rica, but we have a shorter time period and we are going first week of June when it’s not too rainy. Hopefully.

With 9 days I’d look at Europe over Japan. Lots of wasted travel time going to Japan. Depending on where you’ve been before, you can take two cities, London and Munich for example, explore those, and still have time for some day trips.

We've both done the Northeast, so that is out.
Her uncle lives in California, so she would like to go see him but it's not a priority.
My wife has been to Spain, but that's it. My mom is old school Cajun and hated airplanes. We drove everywhere. I would like to leave the country. It's just so easy to go to the Caribbean.

I really want to see Japan before I die, and would like to do it while I am young, so I can eat and drink myself into comas each day.

We had plans to go back to our honeymoon spot in Mexico for our 10th but it all changed at the last minute as I couldn’t stand to leave our young kids. We opted for a weekend in Destin instead.

London. Fly nonstop on BA out of MSY. 9days is perfect. History galore from ancient to modern, an incredible array of food, amazing pub culture, easy to visit, easy day trips outside the city if you need to see less concrete. No language barrier, no need to undertake exhaustive planning for the trip, and you can do everything from theater in the west End to organized pub crawls in various neighborhoods. Shakespeare’s Globe, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, etc etc etc.

That's why I wouldn't "waste" it if I had nine days. Caribbean is so easy to get to, plus there is not much more to do than eat, drink, beach, ..., that I would save that for shorter vacations. I love the Caribbean, but after 5 days I get a little antsy.

Then go there. Plan your flights wisely and maximize your time. No way you regret that decision.

I was in Napa Valley in November. The vast majority of the vines and vineyards are intact. The biggest hit was to Atlas Peak. You should not dismiss Napa because of the fires.

If you love wine you could also do Italy and one of the major wine regions (Tuscany or Piedmonte) although they grow grapes and make wine everywhere in Italy.

London.

At the top of the list for all the reasons you listed. London for a few days, then up to Scotland. I would have to play golf in that case. No way I go back to the ancestral homeland of my people and don't play golf once.

With or without a side trip to Scotland, it is a great short trip destination. Train to Edinburgh is about 4.5 hrs one way, can be scenic. If you don’t mind a connecting flight back in the states, you can fly back to NYC, etc out of Edinburgh.

Japan

Pros:
It's freakin' Japan!
All the positives are most excellent.
Kyoto is stupendous.

Cons:
Not really a Honeymoon/Anniversary destination
Expensive
Other than Tokyo you'll prolly need a tour guide.
Lost travel time (9 days becomes 7 in-country)

Unless Mrs. Coach really wants to visit Japan, I'd opt for the other options.

The UK or Germany in Summer are busy but wonderful.

Everything is open and the days are long.

As for the Wine Country, I've friends out there who told me that the fire damage wasn't universal, and that with proper planning a good wine tour experience can still be had.

Have you thought about Ireland? 8-9 days there will allow you to hit a bunch of spots and even sneak a round of golf in.

I surprised Mrs. Fut with a trip there and she liked it so much that we made a second, which we never do.

tl/dr: With the Wine Country, UK or Germany you can't go wrong. Japan is a bit of a stretch, especially for a anniversary trip.

Agree on Japan as a stretch, simply because it is incredibly difficult to navigate when you cannot read signs. Not saying it’s impossible, just that it adds a layer of complexity/stress you might not find pleasant. (Or hey, maybe you like the utter dislocation feeling)

not as much as I do. She really wants to sit on a beach and do jack shite. Which is probably why we are going to go to a beach.

The only kink in the hose is it will be my buddy and his wife's 5th anniversary, so we may do a 5 day group trip to Vegas and call it a day. Like I said, we are all over the map one this one. Thanks every one for the suggestions. Keep them coming. I don;t want ti end up at Sandals

We're going to Italy in September and we're spending four days on Capri at the end of the trip.

You guys could go to the beach somewhere outside of Florida or the Caribbean? Not trying to get you to spend money, but Italy, France, Hawaii, Croatia, Brazil, etc.

Beaches all over the world.

Hawaii? Do a couple islands; Big Island, Maui. Beaches are everywhere, golf if you want it, volcano's, mountains.

The British Isles are always great. Go to Scotland or Ireland, drive around to different villages, drink in pubs, see the sights.

My wife and I did central Europe (Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna) early in our marriage and had a great time.

Rent a convertible and drive the Pacific coast highway.
