Would 6 mbps be enough for streaming Netflix or running a Fire Stick?

I'm moving to Michigan and unfortunately, Comcast is my only option for internet. AT&T does have a 3mbps offer for $50/month, but fug that.
Comcast Performance Starter offers 6 mbps download speed for $20/month for 12 months and then jumps to $50/month.
Their Blast! option offers 75 mbps download speed for $40/month for 12 months and then jumps to $65-$80/month.
I use the internet to check message boards, read the news, and stream a TV show once or twice an evening.
Would the Performance Starter cover it?

I have the basic Cox 5mbps at home and me, my wife and both of our teenage daughters are constantly on it. We don't run into any issues. Now, we don't do a bunch of downloading so I can't say anything about that. We use Netflix and Amazon Video a ton as well as all have iphone, 2 ipads, laptops, etc.

I rarely even download anything. Just stream. Occasional upload of pictures to social media. Maybe a video to Youtube once a month.
Good to hear. I was really wanting to avoid high charges for internet.

It depends on the service. I have 6MBPS with U-Verse DSL and it is hit or miss. There are times where I'll have to let it load for a few minutes before starting my stream. There are also times where I can't even load Facebook. What I'm trying to say is frick AT&T. Comcast 6MBPS should be stable enough on most days.

This. Exactly this.

No laughing. I'm poor as shite.

Yes. My shitty internet never gets over 4mbps and Netflix runs fine on one device.

No hatin here, brah. I hope it works. All I can say is AT&T is shite.

I would get the 75 mbps, I had a slower connection (~6 mbps) before and streaming was hit or miss, and more miss if anything else was using the connection. 75 was fast enough to have 3-4 devices running with no issues, but they called and offered the 150 for $69/month so I have that now.

Who is they? They actually called you out of the blue or did you complain prior?

I complained of course
If you live in TX, call your electricity provider and complain about the rates, and then call your internet provider and do the same.

I would sell sperm once a week to make up the extra $20/month if I were you

I have 6 mbps internet through Uverse right now and I'm a chord cutter. My wife is constantly streaming videos. It works fine most of the time, but if you are using more than 2 devices ever you can forget about it. I really wouldn't recommend more than 1 device being connected at a time. Most of the time it works flawlessly, sometimes the quality will become pixelated, particularly on live streams. Buffering happens rarely and it's usually not more than a few seconds before it's back on.
I am switching to Time Warner 100 mbps next week though for the exact same price. Cannot wait.

it genuinely amazes me that such shitty fricking speeds are still being offered by major isp's in 2016.
also, it absolutely drives me nuts that tons of hotels routinely have speeds that register below 5 mbps. if a hotel group would make it company policy to have internet in every hotel with speeds no less than 15 mbps (which honestly should be the slowest speeds that exist in 2016), i'd be a customer for life.
i think the slowest speed my isp provides is now 50 mbps. i used to hate them because they had data limits, still do, but now they offer plans with unlimited data....so i'm a happy camper.

As others say, it depends. There are other factors than pure download speed that will affect it. I'd check the upload speed as well, as sometimes Netflix has trouble if there's a bottleneck negotiating the connection (i.e. uploading data).
As long as you're the only one using the connection, it's probably okay. But it will be a little painful. I'm surprised there's not an intermediate option.

Welcome to rural America. Where the price is made up and the speeds don't matter.
