Just took possession of a new laptop on Friday. It has Windows 10, I was still using Windows 7 because I liked it and it worked.

10 comes pre-loaded with Windows Defender but the Dell programs Package is encouraging me to download and purchase McAfee.

Do I need it?

Should I purchase an alternative?

Frankly, I am anti McAfee as I have it on my desktop and it seems to really slow things down. It is constantly scanning and running my processor in the background even when I am not online and am just trying to work on PhotoShop or PowerPoint.

Defender is fine. Windows 8 improved on security. Windows 10 improved even more. Not saying Defender is the best but Microsoft at least tries now.

Dell gets money to plug the McAfee crap even though it isn't needed.

Honestly defender is one of the best.

It also scales with system center in a Enterprise environment too, great av

I've been using only Defender since Windows 7, probably about five years or more. No problems.

Just to be safe I make sure I'm backed up but everyone should be anyway *and* know how to do a restore.
