I was advised by Dell to increase my virtual memory since the computer would freeze while searching or using internet explorer. I thought that I had enough memory since I have 16GB ram. I did some research online and some claim that it would hurt the hard drive by forcing it to act like the RAM with minimal results to increase laptop's efficiency and performance. I rather Windows to automatic choose the size of memory than going with Dell's recommendation of increasing the virtual memory by increasing by using the custom size field. My question to you - should I ignore Dells advice to increase virtual memory to help laptop run smoother. By the way, Dell updated Java and and Adobe Flash Player to aid the internet explorer issue and it helped.

If Dell is performing updates like this on your computer then it sounds like you have a paid service contract and you should be ignoring free advice on a message board.

If that contract is from someone who called you from India claiming he was from Dell, then prepare thy anus.

Dude, if you're paging with 16 GB RAM while surfing the web, something is seriously awry. While I don't think this is the cause, my advice would be to shitcan Internet Explorer and switch to Firefox. And for the love of god, disable Java and Adobe Flash in the browser.

They are idiots. 16g of ram is more than you can ever use unless you're running huge programs.

Your problem is something else.

Have you looked at your resource monitor in task manager during heavy loads?

won't damage hard drive but virtual memory has been pointless for at least 10 years now. As said, need to dump IE.

I'd be shocked if you can use 16 GB of ram on a laptop. If you were running that many programs you'd peg out the cpu first unless you have a full install of Sql server on your computer or you're running VMware workstation or HyperV

remove any program that says Dell, remove your anti-virus. Install MS anti virus. Will probably fix it.
