Just starting to look at WiFi Thermostats. This is for a camp/second home. I need one that I can adjust through with my iPhone when I'm on the road. The camp has WiFi. It needs to be a stand-alone unit. Don't want to buy an entire in-home system. Any suggestions?

Look at the $70 Honeywell link in the thread below.

It's bulletproof, cheap and doors exactly what you want.

Eta here LINK

I've bought like 10 of these from that ms world 3 seller over the years.

All are solid as a rock. No hassle.

Thanks for this. Can you adjust the thermostat from your iPhone when you're on the road without connecting it to an in-home system? Note: "Works with the Wink home automation network"

Does it work independently from systems like Wink, Nest, etc? Will I need to buy any additional equipment?

Yep. It works anywhere in the world using the free Honeywell app.

Ecobee’s have an iOS app as well.

No need for the ecobee at the camp.

The Honeywell WiFi should serve your purpose fine, provided the camp has a constant WiFi connection.

Not that much more expensive for a lite on eBay and if he ends up with some in his house, he can control all from one app. That alone is worth the extra expense to me.

"on ebay"

its twice as much.

and he can do what you're saying with the wink app too

you dont need a hub to use the free wink app to 'aggregate' various thermostats and gain more flexibility.

and why would he care if he has to use a different app for his camp anyway? is it really that difficult?

methinks you do protesteth too much.

I’ve seen them go for as low as 100, not just look at the first one that pops up on your search.

I don’t like to have a mish mash of shite on my phone. You just like to be a cheap arse whenever possible regardless of the clutter.

I have to say I am with CAD on this one. The honeywells are well made and get the job done. There is no reason to spend extra money for fancier version in this instance.

Furthermore, if he wants to get more for his house without installing a different app (THE HORROR!!!), I would suggest the next higher version of the honeywell wifi thermostats. I have had one in my house for 2.5 years without a single issue. And their customer service was excellent when I needed help installing it.

this exact honeywell model is the bedrock for hundreds of thousands of HVAC installs in office buildings worldwide.

its a fricking rockstar and its cheap and he wants it for his camp.

what's not to love about something you can install and never worry about again? he doesn't need color LEDs with animated clouds flying by & shite. he just needs to turn on the heat remotely when he's driving down to his camp and it work every time.

You can get the Honeywell for $70 bucks at Home Depot now as well.

The honeywell is great

Op, how old is your camp? The wiring for a new wifi stat can be somewhat tricky on older homes. I had to run a new "C" wire to power my Honeywell thermostat

It's not terribly difficult but something to plan ahead for

Nothing wrong with it, but he has options if he wants to get something different. Your c-wire addition if he needs it essentially evens the price if he can find one on eBay like I have seen in the past.

so you're saying the used ecobee lites pulled from installs on ebay still have the power-extender (basically the same thing as the add-a-wire kit) still in the box and in perfect working order?

seems like you're inviting more problems.

Ones I’ve seen weren’t open for $100, you may have to wait a bit to hop on one like that. There was one for $120 at the top of the search when I checked earlier, not sure if it is the cheapest now.

It’s an option if he likes the ecobees, it’s really not that much more if you have to do the c wire, especially if you hold out for one of the cheaper ones.

Honeywell will be fine, just another option to consider.
