Just one more quick question guys. I can use the echoes and alexas as stand alone and use their speakers or I can get nice powered speakers and use dots to provide the music through a 3.5 mm cable.

You can do that if you want, but the echo plus has great sound, and it can get damn loud. You likely don't need the other speaker if you went that route, and it'd be a smaller footprint, fewer cords, etc.

2nd gen echo is only $70 right now.

re: Whole house audio solution
I would do the echo route if I knew I could sync up I nice soundbar fed with a fire TV to the whole party. If a tv with a fire cube feeding a hardon kardon 1300 soundbar would team up with echoes, I think I would go that route.

But I'm having trouble hooking a fire cube which drives a Denon receiver with Klipsch speakers at my current place. If I can't do that, if probably just go Sonos for the wife.

Interesting Reddit story. I asked for a while house audio solution that was wife proof and it got taken down for violating policies of Reddit...

For a background music speaker. Let’s not go overboard here with the hyperbole.

Fine...for a $70-$100 speaker, considering the other smart home capabilities you get with it.

I have a full surround sound in my place, so I'm definitely a fan of the fully immersive, larger, more expensive experience. But will sometimes just bump tunes on the Echo Plus.

Does the Denon have wifi? I have a fire stick, denon receiver, and Echo Plus, and I have the Echo connected to both the fire stick and receiver. So I can control the receiver volume, on/off, and inputs directly through the AVR, or do a content search and control play/pause through the fire stick.

Or, if I'm just wanting better sounding music, I'll have the echo play the music through the home theater system and use voice to play/pause, change stations, skip, etc.

I can do that as well. But I'm trying to see if I can get both synced together.

I've got a Google Home, Home mini and Chromecast audio setup throughout the house as a speaker group. Works great and the sound quality currently meets our needs.

I've also got two Echo Dots and after having read this thread will try setting them up as a group.

It's amazing to me that open source hasn't won out and created a defacto standard. Itd be nice to be able to buy any mix of brands and link them together along with adapters for your non-smart audio equipment.

That would be cool. Some of these brands can't even get their own products to link together. Looking at you Bose.

Google has stopped selling Chromecast Audio directly but here's a link to speakers that have it built in: https://www.google.com/chromecast/built-in/audio/

If you have them both set up in the app (echo dot 1, echo dot 2...or whatever) all you have to ask alexa to do is play something "everywhere" and it'll play through both.

re: Whole house audio solution
We all know the correct answer is sonos. You can entertain all the other ideas. Sure echos are cheaper and yes maybe one of the HEOS speakers sounds better than the play 5......but sonos is the answer. Nothing beats it in terms of sound quality, ease of use, and yes price. It’s really not that expensive when you consider what all you get from Sonos.

How many rooms? Sq feet? The Beam is a great little speaker for a tv especially when paired with a set of Play 1s. Then throw some more play 1s (or ones) either stereo paired or solo in the other rooms depending on size.

Someone pinched one of my play 1s when we had a bunch of contractors in our house. Sonos gives you no way to get it back, it literally just disappeared from my system as soon as they set it up which is how I knew it was stolen.

Come on Sonos.

You have cameras? Did you go after the contracting company you hired?

I'm really getting interested and doing a system with a bunch of daisy chained 2 channel amps for the whole house setup. Here's some amps from monoprice-

re: Whole house audio solution
i want sonos to require someone who just registered a unique speaker ID already registered to someone else to confirm first that the previous owner was cool with that before allowing it to change registration.

seems like Business 101. even my "shitty" honeywell wifi thermostats require that.
