Whole house audio solution
We are moving from a house that had wired speakers already installed to a condo where you cannot install speakers in the ceiling.

We used Sonos connect amps to power the indwelling speakers. This have is a whole house solution back in the day when Sonos was the only game in town.

Google audio and Chromecast came out years later and now there is some functionality with Amazon devices as well. This would be a much cheaper solution if it is as easy as Sonos is.

So I'm wondering if Google, Amazon or some other devices had a way of linking speakers together playing from the same source, in this case Spotify?

Should I get echo dots and hook them to a nice powered speaker and spread them throughout the house? Just but the larger Google home devices or the larger Alexa's and Daisy chain them or break them apart?

Or should I just give in and buy the Sonos speakers and spread them throughout the house?

You could achieve what you're looking for through the echo family of products.

You could buy a bundle including sub, and use that as a 2.1 setup in your main listening area: LINK

(you could also do the same with echo plus and have that be the hub). You can then buy other echos to place throughout the home and have them all named and linked. You could then direct where you'd want the content to be played. For example, I can say "Alexa, play music I'd like everywhere" and it'll play throughout the house.

Products are the old versions, but there's more here on whole home: LINK

ETA: yes, I'm pretty certain you could do the same with google home and the apple home products.

Denon has a HEOS line of whole home audio speakers. It has similar functionality as Sonos and I'm sure the sound quality is at least comparable. You can get refurbished units on accessories4less.com also to save some coin.

I would agree with these guys. Though HEOS is gonna be more expensive than the echo/google/apple home options.

Echos have an "everywhere" group that plays on all of your devices. If sound quality isn't the be all end all for you and you were planning on putting Echos in all the rooms anyway, that might be a solution for you.

re: Whole house audio solution
First off, I hope you are bringing that connect amp with you. If not that’s $300 just thrown away.

Sonos has great sound and a great app. If money wasn’t an option I would go with them.

If you want to get by for now, go the echo route. I mean that strictly in a price sense of looking at things. The sound out of those is really surprising.

If you want to meet in the middle, HEOS or MusicCast speakers would do the trick. You can create zones and group them together.

Need more info for anyone to help you out more than that though. (Budget, setup, restrictions)

I have an Echo in the living room and echo dots in other rooms, all set up on a speaker group so I can tell Alexa to "play music everywhere" and the whole house plays music. It's not the best sounding setup ever but easy as hell.

We don't have any installed speakers. So I'm not sure if the use of these. We could take them and use them for not powered speakers to power them, but they wouldn't be installed. We paid full price for these Sono devices back in the day and have had for closer to seven years.

We would end up selling them to buyer for about that or selling to someone else who had already expressed interest.

As far as the rest goes I understand what you are saying. But the condo isn't wired for sound and you can't mount anything in the ceiling. So we could go with the free standing Sonos speakers, but that is expensive if filling a while large condo with about 8 different zones.

Could we afford it? Sure. But we don't want to liquidate any investments so we are going cheap for now and doing something else as we go along.

We are doing other things immediately

Sounds like your best option would be to go with the echos then. I haven’t listened to them personally but I hear they have great sound for being smaller devices. You can also still use the Alexa app on your phone to set up zones.

Depending on your time frame, try to wait a couple weeks until prime day on July 15th.

that is an excellent idea. I forgot about that. We have plenty of time. Closing is thirty days out.

re: Whole house audio solution
Just one more quick question guys. I can use the echoes and alexas as stand alone and use their speakers or I can get nice powered speakers and use dots to provide the music through a 3.5 mm cable.

The question is should I do that, as in get some nice speakers and hook them to dots or just use the larger alexas.

You can get by with some pretty cheap solutions.

I bought some Logitech speakers.
Speakers

They're powered speakers that sound really good for a bedroom, office, kitchen. Paired with an echo dot and you have some pretty impressive sound for really cheap.

I'd stay away from the Alexa speakers. I tried them out, and they're "ok" but not worth the price IMO. You can get much better for less.

re: Whole house audio solution
Well I could just get a bunch of refurbished play ones and scatter them throughout the house. Maybe in primary living area spend a bit more for a play bar and sub and have a 5.1 in living area and scatter the ones elsewhere.

Refurbished play 1 are 119.

Keep with Sonos perhaps.

re: Whole house audio solution
Cheaper option would be with the echos. But if you really wanted to, you could get separate speakers and connect them. But that wouldn’t be much of a cost difference or setup difference than going with the HEOS or MusicCast speakers.

I have one dot in the house and I have it bluetoothed to a Bose Soundlink. The sound link is on a shelf in some builtins and the way it’s tucked in their really makes it sound incredible.

It’s also great bc I only turn the soundlink on when the kids are listening to Pandora. It stays off 90% of the time since the alerts for the Ring doorbell would wake them up at night time if the big speaker was on.

Edit: I saw on Amazon just now you can get 2 Echo For $120. Pretty good deal.
