Where is my iPhone storage disappearing to

If I add all the storage my phone says I have used its like 4-6GB but it says I have no storage left out of 12GB available. This is the phone work gave me and google searches on the subject have been vague

Sync it. Your “other” category is probably bloated with junk.
Once you create a backup you can do a restore and it will clear all the space out.

Messages was one of the larger items and showed only .5GB, Ill try to sync it later

It's a known issue. Two trips to the Apple store couldn't solve it for my wife's phone.
Then one day, she just had like 15 gigs free again after having less than a gig and having her phone completely unusable at times for several months.

If you send a lot of pics and/or vids via text message, that will cause your phone to fill up quickly.
