Has anyone here successfully completed this endeavor? Ideally, I would like it to be DVD/CD, backup camera, apple cartalk compatible as well...?

It's doable.
But aesthetically speaking, it's going to be fugly.

Sonicelectronix has the Pioneer 3300NEX for sale, and they also offer a backup camera with it. It's the size of a regular single DIN, but the screen pops out and up like old school style. Does everything you want, except GPS. I'd either use my phone, or get a standalone unit for GPS, because radios that come with the GPS receiver in them are expensive

If it has CarPlay you don’t need gps. I plug my phone in to my new pioneer and it uses the phone maps but displays in the screen. It’s sweet. I bought a double din though. Jeeps had a weird 1.5 din tall opening with extra space around the sides. I bought a new dash kit that I could put a true double in without the extra space along the sides.
