Video editing machine
Posted by The Next on 7/19/19 at 9:46 pm00
I'm putting together some short training videos for work and I've been using my company Surface Pro 4 as I got started. Now that I'm really getting into it, the Surface is just not going to be a long term solution. I'm using Davinci Resolve and when I'm doing some pretty involved edits or rendering, I cant even have a web browser open it runs so slowly. So, im looking to upgrade and get a new machine dedicated for video editing.
For the video editors of the board, what are your experiences working within a windows compared to a Mac environment? I'm bouncing between a beefed up iMac, a Surface Studio, or a custom build. I definitely dont need anything uber-professional and I'm trying to keep the budget under or around 2k. Right now, I have about 15 videos ranging from 2 to 15 minutes needing to be completed now and we are planning on making quite a few more so it needs to be good for quite some time.
I like the iMac because of the all-in-one and this will not be my every day workstation. Same for the Surface Studio but its considerably more expensive. The custom build will give me more power for the same price as the iMac but way more work to get going.

I don't know what processing davinci resolve uses, but you're 100000% better off building your own machine here
Spec it perfectly to resolves standards and pay a fraction of the cost compared to a surface studio or iMac

I agree. Maybe try to look up some info from specialized system builders for your research.

The reason you would move to a Mac is how incredibly well optimized Final Cut Pro is relative to any other editing software. If you aren’t planning to use FCP, I would probably recommend looking at other options.
That's some good stuff. I saw the specialized machines in my initial research but they are WAY more than what I would need it for and WAY out of budget.
So from what I'm reading, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the CPU doesnt have as much an impact as one would think. An i9 is better than an AMD Ryzen 7 but the improvement is negligible in my situation. The main difference would be with the GPU on the graphics card and the amount of RAM. The hard drives also have a big impact as well.

From what I understand, having everything (OS, software, media being edited) on a super fast SSD greatly improves video editing performance.
Sorry I can't help with too many specifics. It has been a few years since my last build. What you stated sounds like you are on the right track.

So, here's what I was able to put together. Let me know if I'm on the right track or if you'd make any improvements. Newegg has me at $1400 before taxes and shipping. I might be able to get it even less expensive through Amazon.

I have a question relating to this. Im looking at possibly moving into the commercial drone side of things. Up until now I have used the GoPro Studios software to do my editing and it has been great for what I have wanted to do. I think im going to need something with a little more functionality if Im going to take the next step but Im not sure exactly what. I downloaded the GoPro Fusion software to my Surface Pro 3 but I dont have enough RAM to run it. I wanted to stick with the GoPro platform because the other was so easy to learn, I figured this one would be as well.
What are some of the better programs that I can put on the Surface? Or would my best bet be to get a different device? Ideally I would like to keep it on something mobile as this is just something I would be doing on the side. I work offshore and with the downtime at work, I could mess with the video editing.

If you are doing drone footage a Surface 3 won't get it done. The codecs that drones use as well as GoPros and DJI products are pretty resource intensive. I'd attempt to edit it on a machine with no less than 16 GB RAM. If you really want to you can use proxies with Resolve or Premiere Pro.

Ive got a GoPro and A DJI drone and like I said, the Surface Pro 3 has done fine with the GoPro Studios editing software for the small videos Ive done in the past. Is it just because I may be looking at doing a little more in depth editing that you say the Surface Pro wont get it done? As in, needing a more intensive editing software that the SP cant handle?

It doesn't have the processing power to encode high resolution videos at decent bitrates while using something like Adobe Premier

Any recs on devices for around 500 or so? Don't want to spend too much as it would be specifically for video editing. Already have a PC and the SP3 for general use. Really want something portable for this.
Acer Aspire E15?
