Just now signed up for YouTube TV, and the video quality tops out at 720p, and it’s noticeably worse than my regular cable company picture? Wondering if any of the direct tv now, ps vue, Hulu tv etc stream at 1080p?

I think ps vue is 60fps but maybe still 720p, I would do a trial and compare. The picture quality on vue is very strong though

Yeah that’s the most I could find in regards to quality on the different services is frame rate. I will check out ps vue next, and then the others. Currently just on trial with YouTube.
Oh, I also had a question about various services DVR capabilities. Can you set something to record, a sporting event for example, and then play it from the beginning an hour later? Or do you have to wait for the recording/game to finish first before starting from beginning? I like to start some events late so I can fast forward through commercials. It appears YouTube will let me do that.

You can usually start from beginning of something in progress

Youtube will usually ask you if you want to start it live or at the beginning.

All the channel providers are broadcast in 720P/1080i. It is going to be a long time before this changes.
Only speciality content is available in 1080P or greater.

YouTube does 1080 at 60 fps. It just depends on the network you're watching. For example, CBS Sports, AMC, and TNT can be viewed at 1080.
It's the network that you're watching that top out at 720p. The following networks natively broadcast at 720p only;
ABC
Fox
ESPN
ESPN2
ESPNews
ESPNU
SEC Network
ACC Network
FS1
FS2
BigTen Network
FX
FXX
FXM
Fox News
Freeform
Nat Geo
Nat WILD
...and a few others.

Sucks that it’s all the sports networks, but good to know there are a few channels out there.

PS Vue DVR will let you start at the beginning of a currently recording show.
My only complaint with the DVR system is that for sports, it doesn't filter enough. For example, trying to record LSU games, will get you ALL NCAA football games, not just LSU. I usually revert to the ESPN app to replay games the next day. For normal shows, the recorder is great.

quote:That's because pretty much all the sports networks have parent companies that also operate OTA channels, and OTA channels have limits. And rather than invest in different equipment for their OTA and cable channels, they standardized on one resolution to save costs and complexity.

An OTA channel has a limited amount of bandwidth (it's around 19.6mbps), and that's just not enough to broadcast at 1080p (at least not at 60fps, maybe not at 30fps either). So when the transition to digital was happening, they only had 2 choices: 720p or 1080i. Most of the channels that play sports decided that 720p was better for sports, so they went with that.

I’ve got ATTTV on a 4K Apple TV and generally have a great picture. I find it really depends on the channel broadcast more than anything
