I'm traveling to China next week and need to make sure I'm prepared cell phone-wise.

I'm with AT&T so would Passport makes sense? My phone is unlocked, so do I need a SIM card for China? Do I need to setup a VPN?

Any other info would be helpful. TIA

Good luck with that. You can buy sims that go into your phone. Honestly it's better if you just buy a burner phone for your trip when you get there. Also realize that internet access is SEVERELY restricted. Look into goldenfrog vpn service to get around th Great Wall restrictions. It's one of the only one I found that worked reliably.

How does the VPN work with a burner I buy when I arrive? Do I wait to set it up when I have the phone in hand?

Download it before you go and put it on your laptop or a micro SD card. You can transfer it to the burner once you get there. You'll need to go ahead and set it up on your computer too.

I don't know your situation, but I when I go for 1-2 weeks I've found I don't really need phone service. I just use wifi. The time difference is so great that except for early in the morning and late at night everyone in the US will be asleep while you're up.

I use Skype to talk to my wife. It works over there. I've had problems with Google Hangouts. There is a free VOIP app called Zoom that works for conference and video calls.

I also find it remarkably refreshing to be unplugged from my phone for a week or 2. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. Have a great trip.
