A new OTA DVR device available November 14th.

Fire TV Recast

CNET.com

If I hadn’t just bought a HD Homerun, I would really consider buying this.

Just saw that. Looks great for cord cutters.

The best thing about this is amazon letting you split it up into 5 interest-free payments, even though they ship it immediately

So is this a fire tv with the dvr/storage capabilities or only a dvr/storage box?

Looks like only the DVR box since you have to have some type of other device with the fire tv app.

You need an antenna so I'm guessing it's like a Tablo. At such a high price point this seems like a product that is 2 years late. Most of the major markets have the locals covered by the cable streamers already and eventually the smaller markets will get on board and these will only be worthwhile for the cord cutters that are NetFlix/Prime/Hulu only.

Love how they release the Fire Cube and a couple months later release another big new Fire TV type product

Not a bad assessment, but beneficial to those in the Echo system. Plus, with the new Show and this, you can beam recorded sessions directly to it. Keeps the ubiquitous screen thing going.

I kind of want to grab that pair of devices.

When I first saw it, I assumed it was a FireTV with a hard drive and an antenna input with free guide data. At $230, I thought it would be a good deal- the only device to get you essentially all the streaming services + local channels (for those streaming services that don't offer locals)

But without being a FireTV, that's awfully expensive for a device in a world where SiliconDust already sells the Quatro (and others) at half the price, though without the hard drive.

Unfortunately, unless I'm missing something, I think this is a fail, but it's tough to underestimate people's love of "staying within the ecosystem" of a brand.

Even though I called this product 2 years late I will say there are a hell of a lot of people behind the curve. We still seem to get daily threads by noobs asking about cord cutting and getting locals who probably know next to nothing about cable streamers, Tablo, etc. Seeing this product pushed by Amazon and upsold with Fire TVs and Antennas might give them an answer to a question they had no clue how or who to ask about.

I dunno... guess I thought it was cool that you could pay 20%, get the thing in 2 days and try it out, and if you dont like it send it back and not have a $250 hold on your card until the shipment gets back to them

Might not be as cool as I thought lol

They do that often with fire devices. Bought a tablet a few years back and it was 5 payments of $20. I don’t think I could pay full price up front. It was a preorder for prime members with special pricing.

This may be a stupid question (and I didn't look at the CNET review). Can you use it for live TV or would you need a second antenna?

Supposedly that's a piece of shite. I regret not doing my research, and getting suckered into the prime day deal. My fire TV works good. But I wish I'd have gotten an openly Android device. The Nvidia shield looks badass, even though it's been around awhile.
