Terminating Cat 5 Cable
I ran Cat 5 cable thru the attic and soffits (for my security cameras) in my home during construction. I need to terminate the ends into the cat 5 plug. Are there any easy tools to do this? It seems like a tedious process lining the color coded wires up to terminate them.

Get the RJ45 connectors that you can pull the wires all the way through. It makes things a lot easier. You will need the right crimper for that though.

Well you can't do it at all without the right tool(s), but I'm not sure how it could be made any easier. There's no way around having to untwist the wires and put them in the right order. Maybe there's a tool that helps to get the kinks out and line them up, but honestly once you do it a few times I don't see how fumbling with a tool would help much.

As long as you can see well, after a little practice you can do one in a couple minutes. And like Brosef said, the pull-through connectors (used with the right tool to trim the ends) makes it a little easier/faster since you're not worried about getting the length just right.

These are problematic especially in POE applications. Some manufacturers won’t warranty equipment if these are used in the installation.

Because of the potential for shorts?

Mostly because techs don't use the correct tool for terminations.

Just use the regular rj45 and tool. If you can’t make up a rj45 connector you shouldn’t be on a ladder anyway

Now let's talk about using T568A or T568B pinouts...

If you don't know what these mean you might be in over your head.

I'm a sys/network admin and have never had to make my own cables. We pay people to do that.

re: Terminating Cat 5 Cable
I had an internship where I made tons of cable about 12 years ago. I think I can count how many cables I've terminated since on one hand.

ETA

I work at an ISP so we have an entire team dedicated to it.

Didn't go to school to learn how to run cabling

Contractors run the cable, I throw it on the patch panel, and then use a patch cable, which we purchased for specific lengths, to patch into the switch.

Get you a cheap crimper kit and bag of jacks from amazon. I recently did this for some POE cameras I was setting up. I had never done it before, but after watching a quick youtube video I was able to do it.

I'd suggest trying a few connections at your table before doing the real deal. Like others have said, it'll take a couple times to get it down, but after that its quite easy to do.

Don't use a cheap crimper unless you're certain you're only ever going to do one (I mean literally one) crimp in your life. You want a ratcheting, padded handle crimping tool.
