My car has a slot much like the one pictured here. Rectangular hole with a removable rubber liner.

I'd like to make this into a phone dock. I can easily run the cable into the liner, but I'm stumped on what I could do to hold the plug in the correct position. Any ideas?

You know anyone with a 3D printer?

Could also hot glue a Qi charger in there if there is room.

Don't know anyone with a 3d printer. It's actually a wireless charger, but I need to plug in for Android Auto anyway.

Would a magnetic cable work?

That's a possibility. I found one with a right angle plug which should be easier to work with.

Does your phone support wireless charging? If so, that would be the easiest route to take.

It doesn't, but I have to plug in for Android Auto regardless.

Sounds like it's a phone problem not a car one. If this is an endeavor you want, you can find wireless charging phones under $200. Just swap it with one and make the project easier on yourself.

I wasn’t interested in a DVD player but at some point that’s your options

CSB...but read the thread and realize that just charging is not what I'm trying to accomplish.

I'd replace that rubber insert with a custom built wooden docking station. Use 1/2" square wood dowel for the bottom and sides. Use 1/4" plywood for the front back and top. Something like this...

That could look pretty nice. How would you secure the plug? Is there an adhesive that could hold up?

Any kind of epoxy that will work with wood and plastic would work. Silicone would probably be stable enough too.

Could it be as simple as routing the cable through a hole that you put in the bottom of that compartment in the console? You would manually plug it in and drop the cable and phone into the compartment. It's ghetto, but it would be functional.

I'd be afraid of simply mounting the cable end to the bottom of that compartment for free of fricking up my phone port.

This is what I've done currently. Cable runs out of the armrest storage, then down the outside of the rubber insert, then into it from the bottom. It looks fine, just trying to improve the convenience.

Use sandpaper to rough up the plug. Then secure it in the slot using a two part epoxy like JB Weld.
