I got approved to get my MBA with a concentration in IT Management.

However I do not have an IT background.

I would like to get in the field though.

With out an undergrad in IT will I still be considered by employers in the IT field with this degree?

I have a lot of management experience and would like to switch fields. I did some research and saw after I complete that program I could study for numerous certificates to fill the gap in any IT areas I'm lacking.

Any advice is appreciated

TIA

I don't think finding work should be an issue. MBA's are put in charge of IT departments quite often actually. Understand though that you likely be at a disadvantage from the jump as an MBA in charge of an IT department with little or no real world IT experience.

Make sure you have good people under you, listen to them when it comes to technical issues, and seek their input often. In the time I've been in the field, I've found that there is nothing that is more hated than an IT manager with no practical IT experience making decisions (often with little to no staff input) concerning the technical direction of the department/company.

Do you have the ability to get a job as a Graduate Assistant working at an IT department? That would give you some real world practical experience while attaining your MBA.

I personally have not seen a lot of CTO/CIO's or senior level managers in IT departments who have not worked as analysts/engineers first.

The director of IT in my organization is one of the most knowledgeable IT pro's I have ever met. He started as a helpdesk intern and worked his way up.

Pretty much sums it up. Similar to the advice given to young military officers...listen to your NCOs and treat them right, they will keep your career on track

I'm still in the military.

I'll be pursing this degree online.

I have worked with IT personnel but no real world work, only counterparts on different projects.

A majority of my background is project management. I wanted to continue tha in the civilian world but in a new realm.

I love studying and learning new things. Wanted a challenge as I get into my 30's and look to transition out of the military in the next 5-7 years.

Sounds like you will have plenty of opportunities if you can continue to learn the IT side. Good PMs have the chance to really make some money in the IT side.

I said this a couple of days ago on here, work experience is the most valuable asset when you are applying for IT.

Get an internship somewhere, make friends with other guys (or girls..) in the field. Get some good references.

Certs are nice and will get you a job interview; by all means keep doing it. But any competent IT department will be able to tell if you are reciting vs. discussing.
