Smart TV compatibility with Amazon Echo

I have a Samsung smart tv and I’m trying to figure out if I can control it with the Amazon Echo without having to buy a hub. It seems as if models 2016 or later can be accessed via echo by using the smart things app but my tv is an earlier model. Is there a way around having to buy a hub?
