New house has a media room and I'm trying to decide if I should go with a 4k projector or a standard LCD. I think I can do an LCD for less money and I really don't want to spend a ton building it out. I'll likely use the room for listening to music more than watching movies.

TIA

I’d go LCD if you are on a budget

Thanks to HDR, projectors can't compete with a good TV unless you are willing to spend stupid money.

What are we talking as stupid money for a good projector?

I'll probably be in this same position soon.

How big? Best Buy had an 85” sony and 83” Samsung for $4500 and $2700, respectively.

A couple of things. I use a projector on a regular basis but definitely not an everyday viewing. I use it for evening football games and “movie night.” It’s an older 1080p. I would trade higher lumens over 4K if I had a choice. I’m fickle but if rank the features in this order:
- Lumens
- DR
- Resolution
- Frame Rate

A low lumen projector is worthless unless you have pitch black. Mid lumen (what I have) you can have ambient light or light from exterior room, or high lumen (allows to watch in daylight).

Other consideration are short throw versus long throw and weather you plan to Bluetooth your sound or run audio, speaker, and power cables.

Last is mounting and screen. It’s no easy project but I prefer my 101” screen for movies and football games over my buddies new $3599 82” HDR TV... but that’s just me.
