So i have found out that the Shield isnt the only device that will play 4k hevc movies anymore. The 2 devices i have tested and works are the new Fire stick 4k, and a new Roku tv.

I have not tried the older Fire 4k square or cube.

Now for a question i havent tested yet.

Does anyone know if i were to put both the 4k and 1080p versions of a movie in a folder, would Plex play the 4k file if possible and play the 1080p file if not? I believe i tried this before and it tried to trancode the 4k down.

Apple TV 4k for about a year now baw. Just released early access for Plex Pass users to the enhanced video player so no need to transcode from mkv.

Last I checked into this is it's best to have 2 separate libraries. One for HD and one for 4k. This is how I have mine set up.
