What's up guys, first off I'm extremely illiterate when it comes to computers so feel free to laugh away if this is a simple fix (I really hope it is!)

I've got an Acer laptop with a broken screen (my doing) and I am borrowing a monitor from a friend so that I do not have to use my TV screen.

My problem is this: my laptop does not have a VGA cable input, but the monitor does. So what I have done is bought a VGA/HDMI adaptor. I've plugged my HDMI chord to the adaptor and I have a VGA chord from the adaptor to the monitor. However; I am getting an error message on the monitor that says "No signal, Check video Cable". When turned on, the monitor has a yellow light at the bottom that stays yellow while the message appears, but within two seconds the yellow light begins blinking and the monitor goes black.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Not sure how to add pictures or I would do that! I will be around to answer any questions, thanks in advance!

Not sure what that is! Haha. The only things plugged into the monitor is the power chord and the VGA chord.

Do I need to press any buttons on my laptop? When I connect to the HDMI to the TV it is automatic.

You need to select the proper input on the monitor (if it has multiple inputs) just like you would on a television
