I've been a PC guy since switching from a Mac Powerbook 20 years ago. I realize that most would suggest going back but I'd prefer not to.

Situation: Co-founder/CIO for a rapidly growing website. I need to step up graphics packages along with a ton of video editing. Current laptop was customized & purchased from HP minutes after the Auburn Kick Six so it's old and slowing down even when I'm just moving video captures to external HDD. 1 TB Internal HDD, 16gb RAM, and Intel core i7-470702MQ 2.20GHz processor. NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M/Intel HD Graphics 4600. Windows 10 Home. Blu-Ray burning drive, fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard, and 17" screen.

HP seems to have cutback on customizing options. Dell has somewhat better options (though not everything.) Stock laptops at Best Buy aren't much different.

NEEDS:
- At least 512gb SDD
- 15-17" (touchscreen is a non-factor)
- Able to multitask with graphics software while rendering video (Adobe most likely.)
- Able to handle full 3.0 16 port hub + portable HDD/thumbdrives/SD camera cards direct to laptop ports.
- Can handle multiple Chrome windows (each with multiple tabs), Outlook, and several windows explorer folders open
- Internal disk drive
- Needs to last at least 5 years

you're going to need a top-end laptop with a real graphics card

a Razer 15 that is decked out likely fits your needs

a Thinkpad Xtreme from Lenovo likely would work, but i'm not sure if that's 15"

Dell XPS 15 is well-regarded as well

This is a weird requirement. That is completely up to you.

I’d say look at the top of the line Surface’s. They are top quality.

do they have a USB-C this year? i think the I/O of the Microsoft stuff is going to limit him

that's why my first choice was the Razer. iirc it has dual Thunderbolt/C connections

May want to look directly into some gaming-level laptops since that should get you up there with the specs you're asking for. Dell XPS, Dell Alienware, ASUS RoG, MSI...be interested to see what you decide on.

Probably a valid point. It’s been a few years since I’ve looked at their line but I’d imagine they have some offerings with USB-C by now?

last year i went with a surface book 2 b/c it had a USB-C and the surface laptop 2 did not. but the 3 may have one (haven't looked at them much)

i also don't know how the surface 3 will hold up over 5 years with a major graphics card in it, etc.

that's Razer's primary issue though. i think they have a rep of dying 2-3 years out...but honestly i think most elite performance laptops are going to have life expectancy issues. there just aren't the thermals to push that graphics card very much over long periods of time

Macbook Pro 16 honestly would be a great choice, but I understand the reluctance.

Don't let some of these fools steer you towards some spec-driven solution. Get something that sources components with higher QC than lower-end laptops and most importantly, something that has been properly engineered to cool the system under sustained load. This is where expensive laptops from popular brands SOMETIMES shine.

For all the specs you need, it'll be well above the power requirements of usb-c. You're not going to be able to get power delivery though a usb-c dock. It'll be thunderbolt. The Dell XPS 15 and Lenovo P1 are both decent thunderbolt laptops. Avoid the Dell TB16 dock at all costs. CalDigit makes a decent thunderbolt dock.

Go with a Chrome OS. You’d be surprised.

Thanks for the advice. I'm used to completely customizable laptops so I was surprised when I went to HP's website and saw how little was customizable now.

We're hoping to build out in the next 5 years to where I'm not doing most of the graphics work. (Hence the 5 year figure.)

Why are you relying on a laptop for video editing?

Look for a gaming laptop with 9th Gen proc and a GeForce RTX 20 series GPU, add Ram and you should be good to go. You can't buy a new performance PC without an SSD, so that's not an issue.

Why not? I mean, you could build a Mac Pro or a Windows desktop with a ton of ram and internal storage but the same could be done with a high performance laptop and an external drive.

My Surface laptop has USB C, so did my last one. I love them and have bought them for everyone at the office that needs a computer.

I have an IBM Lenovo X1 Carbon. I7, 16gb ram, 1tb SSD drive and it’s a beast. Can’t believe have capable and light at the same time it is.

Understood, they are getting much better at keeping these things cool. Check out the heat piping on this beast.

I use both a PC and a Mac and like both. For the business you’re describing, I would personally buy a Mac and write it off as a business expense.
