Need a good non-phone music player that works with Amazon or Google
Posted by AUjim on 12/7/18 at 8:48 am00
Does such a thing even exist anymore?
I'd like to get my kids dedicated music players, and I already have both google and amazon. I'm not totally opposed to using apple music, but i'd rather not go the route of buying individual songs again if avoidable. I'm coming up empty, but admittedly, certain technologies are leaving me behind.

If you want to stream, you need a phone. You could get a data only sim to put in the phone so it couldn't be used for calling.
If you don't want to stream, you need just a basic mp3 player, but you will need to purchase songs.
If you already have a Google play music, or YouTube music, or Spotify account, you could use an old phone with no sim, connect to WiFi, and download songs for offline playback through one of these services.
If none of these options work, then I am confused about what you are asking for

I think this is what I needed to know to clear up. I wondered, but couldn't figure out the google music issue-I know I can download to listen offline, but evidently that feature/format is not portable to a standard mp3 player.
They're 10 and 7, and I'm trying to avoid introducing another outlet for distraction, so a simple music player was the goal, but it sounds like if I want to go that route, I'm going to have to pony up for buying the songs individually.
Thank you for the feedback

Someone else might chime in with a different solution, but as far as I know there is no music player that will do what you need.
Maybe there is an iPod you could use, and get Spotify or apple music
However, an iPod is going to have the same functionality as a phone without the sim so you would be better off with just an old Android phone paired to Google play music

I think your best bet would be to use an old phone, delete all other apps, and put password protections on everything that can't be deleted. So, in theory, they would only be able to access the apps you want them to.

Itouch. No phone service. Got one for my niece.
Bought new iPods for my kiddos a couple of months ago. They use them mostly at home (i.e. on WiFi). They stream music from both Google Play and Amazon. I turn on my phone’s hotspot for them when we’re traveling. I think they can download a certain amount of media from Google Play to have for offline listening. FWIW.
