Multi Room Audio w/ Alexa question

So I understand that Alexa won't work in multi room audio via blutooth connections to the speakers (TBH This is a huge pitfall to me). I'm about to purchase some 25' aux cables that I can snake to my soundbar system in my bedroom and to my receiver in my living room. I'll have to reconfigure my harmony for those inputs but that's easy. What I want to know is if the Alexa is plugged into a 3.5 speaker, when that speaker isn't in operation will Alexa know to play audio through its internal speaker?

If there is something plugged into the 3.5 jack, the Echo/Dot internal speaker will not work whether the device that is is plugged into is working or not.
You could have a cable plugged into the Echo/Dot with nothing on the other side, and the Echo/Dot speaker will not work.
