So I’ve only used iTunes/iPods for music but my 7 yr old wants a music player for his headphones and my wife doesn’t trust him with an expensive iPod Touch. They’ve discontinued all the cheaper nanos and shuffles.

My question is, if I buy him an MP3 player can I easily takes songs downloaded on iTunes and move them to an MP3 player? And if so, how?

iTunes files are AAC format (.m4a file extension) and haven't been DRM'd for a long time, so yes for those. You would have to convert them to MP3 if the player doesn't support ACC.

The Sansa MP3 is one of the more common cheap/small MP3 players, here's a how to article on getting converting iTunes files to MP3 and then copying them to the Sansa. LINK

I've been pleased with the Sandisk MP3 players I've owned: LINK

They support various file formats and micro SD cards.
