Ok my employer has tasked me with purchasing a MAC for a new program we are acquiring. Here are the two machines that are available to us. I ran the full demo on a brand new macbook pro with 8GB memory and 2.6Ghz I-5 and noticed with the program running that it would cause the laptop to freeze/lag. the program is a data acquisition and recovery program. Once again these below are the only 2 options available to us. Any help is appreciated
MACBOOK PRO
2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Built-in battery (7 hours)
MAC MINI
2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
16GB memory
1TBGB hard drive
Intel Iris Graphics
OS X Yosemite
2 Thunderbolt 2 Ports
4 USB 3 Ports
1 HDMI Port
1 Gigabit Ehternet port
1 SDXC

does portability matter at all?

This one is used, correct? Intel HD Graphics 4000 are from the 2012 models.

They would be coming straight from Apple

It's refurbished then. The Mac Mini is a better computer (most recent updated).

get mac mini, not the newest one but late 2013 model so you can easily upgrade RAM

you mean 2012 model. but if the new one already has 16gb of ram, i don't think the older models even support more than that.

Iris Graphics were in the 2012 model?
never mind, i misunderstood what you were saying. OP said that those were his only two choices though. Go with the Mac Mini if portability is a non factor.

No, it sounds like it's the "old model still sold as new" non-Retina MacBook Pro, which has a SATA hard drive and a DVD burner.
These are listed on the Apple Store site and can be configured exactly how he just listed it out specs-wise. All the retina models have built-in flash and no SATA drive so it has to be that old model.
