I’m opening up my own business soon and need a laptop that will be very reliable and won’t crap out on me. I also need top notch security since it will have sensitive customer information in it.

I’m ignorant when it comes to what’s great computer technology these days so I need recommendations. I also need something that will be able to connect to Google mesh WiFi.

Brand, processor, anti virus recs?

What software an peripherals are you going to be using? That determines your system requirements.

I just ordered the Lenovo t580. It fit my needs. You can get more bang for your buck and get it faster of you order thru ellen_mouse on eBay. i also ordered the extended battery and 2 docking station and saved an additional 250 over what I would have ordering from lenova

Dell Latitude. Get one with the latest i5 or higher. SSD is a must.

Regardless of what brand or spec you buy, you need to upgrade to Win10 Pro (you can do it after you buy it very easily for under $100.) The enables you to turn on Bitlocker which encrypts the local drive. I don't know what industry you're in, but if you have unencrypted data stored and you lose the laptop, you have to inform the customers of any information lost in almost every state. If it's encrypted, no duty to inform.

Also, USE DIFFERENT PASSWORDS for everything (use 1Password or Lastpass) and LOCK YOUR PHONE (since you're probably syncing email to it with sensitive calendar invites, customer contact info, etc.)

McAfee or Symantec anti virus are fine (so are a lot of others), but make sure you *pay* for the license after the trial period expires or it won't do anything.

How portable does it need to be? Do you do stuff like pool design that is graphics intensive, or is it just MS Office, etc.?

Baseline: 256GB Solid State Drive (SSD), 8GB of RAM or more, and an Intel processor that is either Core i5 or Core i7.

Any of major brands will do. Dell, HP, Lenovo. Just get an i5 or i7 processor, solid state drive (SSD) and 16 gigs of ram.

Good advice here. I got a Lenovo P52 + docking station with an i7 and 32 gigs of ram which was way too much. 16 would have been sufficient. Very happy with the laptop though even though I overpaid

This is a great computer. The new ones are coming out so last year's models are getting closed out. The entry price is about 900 on them now I think and the higher end is at 1299 on Microsoft/B&H and a few others right now I think.

I hardware distribution and Lenovo thinkstation like the one above are awesome. all the p series are great. Another Lenovo I like is the x1 carbon expensive but it is the best one they offer in my opinion. But if using cad get the p series for sure. If you get Lenovo let me know what you looking and how much they charging and will let you know if a good deal.

Obligatory MacBook Pro

Seriously, I've been playing around with a Surface Laptop lately. First foray into new MS hardware and I'm impressed.

I'm not super well informed either, but considering you admitted it I'd simply buy one of the well known brands with a low end model with a SSD (solid state drive). Everything else will likely be more than adequate if it has a SSD.

Laptop prices have increased dramatically in the last couple of years because they are now so fast and have so much memory. Most of the "business" laptops have 10x more memory and speed than most will ever need.

I just bought an Acer 2018 model with SSD for $379 and it will do way more than I ever need it to do. Battery life and size are completely unnecessary for me. Worst case I can bring an external or extra battery, but even airplanes have power outlets now.

After all the other replies in the thread, now I understand shitposts. I also understand how people have 30k posts, when I don't think I've flogged the log that many times (this now becomes an interesting question). Thanks 756. Value added.
