I just got an XS last week and, thankfully, kept my 8+. I back up the 8+, swap the sim card to the XS and go to restore the backup to the XS and low and behold, it's not possible as the XS is still on software version 12.3.1 and the 8+ apparently got its very own update a few weeks ago to 12.3.2.

They're not compatible until the next update...

Not a big deal, I'm just using the 8+ until the next update but does anyone know when that will be? I've googled a bit and it seems to be a mystery. Obviously I'm not a big tech guy as I didn't even know this was a thing (different software versions on different devices).

They dropped the seventh beta to iOS 12.4 today, so it should be soon, possibly later this week in line with the Apple Card rumors

Set up the XS as a new phone without loading your backup.

Update to 12.3.2, then wipe it.

Then load your 8+ backup.
