I have a mid 2012 MbP and am installing a 500 gb SSD. I can do the hardware install easily, but what do I need to do to copy OS and everything over properly
I have all my files saved on an external drive
Thanks

I loaded "El Capitan" to a flashdrive and installed from there
Just download the Mac OS you prefer.

Go to OWC Computing. They sell SSD upgrade kits and will include tools and a case so that you can use your current HD as an external drive. Instructions on the process here, you'll want to have a time machine backup of your current system. I've done this 2 or 3 times now, easy peeezy.

Yup backup to Time Machine--nothing to it.

I recommend doing a complete new install, then copy your files off the old drive or just use the old drive as an external.
Connect the SSD via USB and install latest MAC OS designating the SSD as install directory. Once done, power off, uninstall old HDD and install new ssd, Done.
At least it was that simple for my 2011 MB and that was a couple years ago. Night and Day with the ssd!

Yeah, they work, known compatibility and 5yr warranty. Worth a little extra $$ to me for ease and peace of mind.
