My internet will go out at least a few times while streaming a movie or sporting event. This happens on different devices and using different streaming services. How can I tell if upgrading my router would solve this issue or if I just have a shitty internet connection from Cox?

Trying plugging a wired device directly into your modem - thus bypassing the router.

Have you tried the basics - cycling power on your modem / router, updating the firmware on your router, etc.?

This. If you don't have a modem, plug directly into a computer and do a speed test. The first thing I would do is check for a firmware update and then a power cycle on the router.

I've power cycled it several times, as well as hard wired a laptop to do a speed test. It works well for that, and works well when I do a speed test on a wifi connected device but it intermittently goes out. I haven't updated the firmware yet, didn't think about that will try that.

It's a router/modem in 1, this one:

Can you leave a computer hard wired to the router? If so, run a continuous ping to 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.2. When the internet goes out on your wireless devices, go to the hard wired computer and see if you're dropping pings there as well.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

Will have to try that, thanks.
