How to allow a desktop to use your phone's internet connection.
Long story short

We live in BFE

We've been paying for wild blue satellite internet for years and Direct just dropped them.

My wife(no pics) has to do sales taxes every month so we need a desktop computer to have access to the internet.

I purchased what I thought would accomplish this but I can't get it to connect to my phone's hotspot.

Other than buying a wireless wireless ethernet card is there another plug and play to make this work?

I would think any kind of USB wifi adapter would work, but I'm not a computer genius by any means.

Macs do this automatically.

Probably easier to get a USB wireless adapter for the desktop instead of setting up an ethernet bridge.

Does your phone and service provider allow for tethering and do you have a wireless card built into the desktop?

Right. Just wondering if Windows has this built in also.

Your question is you need your desktop to have wireless internet basically right? You simply need a wireless card, you can get one that uses usb from multiple companies.

If you have a wireless plan that lets you use your phone's hotspot, you should just be able to turn the hotspot on. Do you have an iphone?

Yes I can tether

PC does not have a wireless card

Is this the easiest way?

If so that is what I will do. I just figured there would be an easier way in this day and age than buying a wireless ethernet card.

Sorry seeing you already bought the bridge device.
Those are tricky, because you are sort of in the blind for how it connects to the wifi network. It may not like the security settings of the hotspot or have some compatibility issues.

buy this

install it

turn on phone hotspot

join wifi network (hotspot) from the PC

depending on the phone, you can just plug the phone into the computer via USB (like you were charging it) and then enable the phone settings to share data through USB.

All my At&t phones have done this. Not sure about other carriers.

Iphone

Step 1, disable the adapter for Internet connection in Windows. Step 2, connect the iPhone to the PC by a USB cable. Step 3, in the iPhone “personal hotspot” settings, enable “USB only” Internet sharing. A new adapter in Windows will appear (“Local Area Connection 2” here).Feb 24, 2017

How to Tether an Internet Connection with an Android Phone
Connect the phone to a computer or laptop by using the USB cable. The best success with this operation is when the computer is a PC running Windows.
Open the Settings app.
Choose More, and then choose Tethering & Mobile Hotspot.
Place a check mark by the USB Tethering item. Internet tethering is activated.

Not wireless, but I've tethered a laptop for years using my phone via an app called Easy Tether. Cost me around $10 for the app. Supposed to be able to use Bluetooth, but I've always used USB so it can charge my phone

My story:
Live in BFE
Only broadband is fixed wireless $75/mo for under 1mbps.
New smart meter now interfears with signal and have to give it up.
Use Mobile Hotspot/ tethering (AT&T Unlimited) Unlimited data is very limited on hotspot/ tethering. 10GB limit runs out after 2 days. No other carrier offers true unlimited.
Find a Verizon offer for Prepaid Unlimited Data Plans that are TRUE unlimited. Buy their $50 referb Jetpack, connect up to 8 devices at a time.
True Unlimited Data for $65/mo. prepaid.

re: How to allow a desktop to use your phone's internet connection.
BTW,
I have to hunt down the spot (closest to an outlet for charging) with the best Verizon signal.
With 4 bars, I get low 30's ping and anywhere between 5mbps -10mbps LTE speeds depending on the time of day. Enough for a couple Netflix streams at once.

Edited to say: The Jetpack's wireless is weak. My old ASUS WiFi router has a great repeater function that covers my whole house. Basement and all.
